TEND, Interesting. I have only seen Gosling in "The United States of Leland" (2002) and "The Notebook". I liked the first film; it also stars Don Cheadle, who I think is always excellent. It is really frightening - the view the boy has of the world he lives in. Gosling was quite good in a complex role like this one. "The Notebook" was ok - I thought it overly sentimental and I read the book and felt it was really sappy. I believe Gosling was introduced in that film, anyone know if that is true? He has a long way to go I think, lots of potential. I will have to see "Half Nelson". It sounds interesting and on the line of the Leland film.

Jamesian, I never like to tell too much either. I sometimes go to read up on films on Amazon, etc and they spoil the film by nearly revealing the ending. Too many spoilers out there. Thanks for the sparse information. Turkish - interesting. I will check it out.

manolia, Thanks for the information. I knew there had to have been film/s of that book. I know the movie link and use the site, also. I tend to use the Amazon, so I can buy the film if I want it. I will have to check the imdb site more often from now on. My librarian always uses it to look stuff up for me.

Glad you could appreciate "A River Runs Through It". I never heard of "The wind that shakes the barley", but it has my interest now. I will try to see it. I love films that make me cry. I have a weakness for that sort of thing.

Niamh, You are too quick for me! I was trying to write replies to everyone's postings and then saw yours come in - a new one. No, actually I have never seen those films you mentioned, but imagine they would be a total riot. Now you will not believe this - I have never seen "Silence of the Lambs". I love both actors, but I felt it would be too creepy. I know I have to see this film soon. I just keep putting it off and eveyone tells me it is amazing. Then I will have to watch the spoofs you suggested.
Not sure if I recall the songs, but will have to rewatch again soon. Songs can really make a film I think.

I didnt like silence of the lambs. but many people i know do. But i remember you said you hadnt seen Psycho. It fantastic and well worth viewing. Old one not the new one! Athought it was good...just not as good!

Niamh, Yes, know the old "Psycho" with Anthony Perkins. New one is called "American Psycho" isn't it? My library has "Psycho" I think. Next time I go there I will pick it up. Now I really do want to see it. I love Hitchcock and I love thrillers.
I have also seen the new "American Psycho" come in my library from time to time, and I nearly took it out, but then refrained from doing so. Doesn't it star Christian Bale?
I don't really envision liking "Silence of the Lambs". My son said it scared the wits out of him. He usually likes pretty gutsy stuff so that is sort of why I stayed away so long. The satires do sound funny though.

I am going to check the book thread out, and then I really have to lay down again. I am feeling treadful. Hope you don't get any worse. If you end up with the head congestion good news is the terrible sore throat gets better.

Dear Janine: A half-nelson is a wrestling expression meaning a hold from behind under one arm and behind the neck. A full-nelson is illegal. Either way you have your opponent at a considerable disadvantage. RJS

No there was an actual remake of Psycho about eight years ago. it has anne heche in it. I've never seen american Psycho though. Dont know if i'll like it! Yes it has the wonderful Christian bale in it. I still cant believe he's the little kid in Empire of the sun!

Hope you get better soon! Have the head congestion now. throat not as bad but when i sneeze it hurts my ears! only two more days of work and then i'm on hols so i can recuperate then!

Niamh,I had the ear thing too - awful mess isn't it? Now when I blow my nose one ear feels like it is congested. Also my whole face burns and hurts - nose and eyes, sinus. Sorry you have to work. I don't know how I would do it. I can't take an antihistimine, so I have been in trouble this time.

Niamh, Hmmm, now I have to go look "Empire of the Sun" up to refresh my memory. I saw a film "Little Budda" and Keanna Reeves plays Budda. Now that was a bit strange casting. He was young, not quite a kid. I often spot stars in films, when they were young or children. Not long ago, I saw "Forever Young" and the kid was star of "Lord of the Rings", Elijah Wood. He was great in that. He was adorable as a young boy in "Forever Young". Now he has gone on to be in some really good stuff. I liked him in "The Icestorm", directed by Ang Lee.

Hope you get well with rest and sleep soundly. 4 AM sure comes early. Maybe you got my flu bug at the airport - came in on a plane. That is probably it. Hope you are better soon. Take care and rest when you can.

Janine and Niamh, you poor things!! I hope you're feeling better soon! There's soemthing wrong this year- far too many people have been getting sick!! I myself missed a solid 29 days of class last semester with throat and sinus infections, then a stomach virus, then bronchitis. I wish you both good health soon!

Also, you poor things on the movie front!! How have you never seen Silence of the Lambs?? I LOVE that movie. The thing that most people can't seem to get past is the fact that it has a cannibal in it. And a serial killer. But it's really not about that!! The characters are...amazing. Like honestly, I don't know what to say. It leaves me speechless. Perhaps I've seen it so many times now that I just don't notice the nasty parts, but I think it's more that I'm so fascinated by the characters that those parts aren't important. It's really not a slasher or anything like that. The first time you see it, all you'll see is the nasty parts, but once you get past that there's soo much more to it! (Can you tell I'm a little enthousiastic?

Ah!! Other people in the world saw Little Buddha!! I watched it in a world religions class last year. I found it very odd. The dialogue was aweful, and poor Keanu was terrible. He was very young though. If you want to see him younger, he was also in Babes in Toyland with Drew Barrymore when she was 12. Haha, now that's funny stuff.

My friend told me the new film was out, but I have not seen the second yet? So this is the 3rd right? Boy, I am really behind the times.

Ok,ok - keep the sympathy coming. You are so understanding it helps. You are making me feel a whole lot better. At my age one does not bouce back easily from these things. I just doubled the dose of my medication, because I could not stand the constant drip drip drip. I fear poor Niamh is in for it - she seems in the beginning stages, where I was on the weekend and I can attest to the fact it only gets worse. Funny she said her left ear is hurting her, in my case it is my right - we could be a matched set of wrecks!
Yes, something wrong is probably global warming and all the crazy weather changes constantly. I had a flu shot - like it really did me a world of good

Yes, yes I know it is true. I keep putting off seeing some of the really good films because I think they will be really disturbing. Cannibalism is one of those subjects, definitely. I did hear it was about a lot more than that. Just that it recalled me to those terrible Domer murders at the time it came out to theaters. I actually watched the Johnny Depp film about Jack the Ripper a couple of times now and liked it a lot. That was totally gruesome, although you did not see the murderer actually commit the crime, just the aftermath. Now I recall name of film - "From Hell".

Yeah really, I feel the same way - no one can copy the MASTER! My favorite is "Dial M. For Murder", too. I love it all taking place in one appartment. "Rear Window" runs a close second. I like "Rope" - also a one location/apartment film. I heard "Notorious" was Hitchcock',s best film but I have never seen it, unfortunately. It is hard to find - expensive to buy online. If they don't have the TV shows out yet, they should. They were great - I always watched them.

Yes, came in the library one day and I could not believe that was Keanu - so I had to watch it. Strange film I thought. I agree - dialogue was awful and Keanu did not fit the role at all. He was so made up looking. It was strange casting. I think that the singer, Chris Issak, was also in the film. He played the father of the little boy - supposidely the reincarnation of Buddha. I kept thinking "what parent would really buy this one stuff?" It was strange casting and a very different film indeed. What did your professor in religions class have to say about the film?
How old was Reeves in Babes in Toyland? Yeah, that would be really funny!

Drew Barrymore was in ET, remember - she was even younger and stole the show with that simulanous screem with ET. She was cute then, so was ET!

Fun talking about film and gets my mind off my miseries. "Misery" - now that was a film - strange one.
