Dillon is 11 and 1/2 and he still thinks he is a puppy too. Poor guy has arthritis as well. I buy him those squeaky toys made of fuzzy fabric and he lays on the couch (yes, he is spoiled and I also have washable slipcovers...) anyways, he lays there and holds the toy in his mouth and makes it squeak, it is so cute.

I wish Dodger would just lay down with a toy, but no, he has to run around and shake his head with it, the sqeaking really gets on your nerves at times, and it often happens that you have to take the sqeaking toy from him and substitute it with something less noisy, otherwise he would go on for half a day.

Three cheers for the hero dog!!!!

LETTING SLEEPING DOG LIE SAVED MT. HOOD CLIMBERS
    By ANDY GELLER

A loyal dog saved three climbers from an icy death after they fell from a ledge and became stranded on Oregon's Mount Hood, officials said yesterday.

The two women and a man were rescued after surviving a brutal night huddled in sleeping bags, shielding themselves from high winds - but it was their faithful black Labrador, Velvet, who made the difference between life and death, rescuers said.

"The dog probably saved their lives" by lying across them during the freezing night, said Erik Brom, a member of the Portland Mountain Rescue team.

He described the wind in the canyon as "hellacious."

"We're soaking wet and freezing," said one of two rescued women as she walked to an ambulance.

After Velvet helped the climbers get through the night on the 11,239-foot mountain, radio transmitters the size of eyeglass cases led rescuers to the group.

Rescuers gave the climbers food and clothing before they all walked down the east face of Oregon's highest mountain.

The three were taken away in the ambulance, with Velvet leaping in behind them. The climbers were expected to recover.

One of the women, whose name was withheld, was hospitalized with a head injury.

The other two climbers were identified as Matty Bryant and Kate Hanlon, both 34 and teachers in suburban Portland.

Authorities credited the climbers with remaining calm and using safety equipment.

"The most important part of this . . . is that they did everything right," said local Sheriff's Department Lt. Nick Watt.

In December, three climbers vanished on Mount Hood.

Rescuers found one climber, Kelly James of Dallas, who died of hypothermia.

The other two - including Brooklyn resident Jerry "Nikko" Cooke - were never found and officials believe they're dead.

The above is a photo of my partner & HIS dog.

I love animals of all kinds...... check out my post in the "name for a green dragon" thread to see a list of species.

Until I met my partner I would have told you that I never met a dog I didn't like. That's all over now...... I HATE that little white ***** (she dog) with every ounce of my being. The feeling is quite mutual. She insists on ALWAYS being between the two of us.... in bed, on the couch, out for a walk, in the car....everywhere. If I kiss him..... she yips & tries to bite me! When he & I spend any time together without her..... she PEES IN OUR BED (always on MY side of the bed, of course). She shreds any paper that she can get her mouth on.... mail, paperwork, my tax returns, more rolls of toilet paper than I can count, etc. Oh, and she's a leg humper, too......

Aww such a cute dog with such a bad attitude Biblio, what a shame. But it is not an unusual thing for dogs to be jealous. There have been many cases of someones dog acting out after someone moved in with them, or the sweetest of dogs taking a bad attitude to someone's new girlfriend or boyfriend. So im sure its not personal, at least for the dog
Ive never had a dog who was a leg humper....but I have been victimized by one before, very unpleasant and awkward experience. Especially if the owner just stands there laughing and not doing anything about it

I love animals. Always have, and always will. All types as well, from reptillian to mammal to bird to.....well, maybe not human as much I have had a dog since birth. My first dog I had since I was born till i was 11, then she died but at the old age of 15 having had a very nice life. I then got my current dog, Hunter. Shes very different to my first one, with LOTS more personality. Huge eater, huge barker, and just incredibly amusing all around.
What I love about having a dog is walking them. There is something very theraputic about walking a dog.

I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.

Is that an Italian Greyhound, TRJ? I think you spoiled the dog. I never let my dog on the bed. In fact she's rarely allowed upstairs to the bedrooms. You have to established what is allowed and what isn't. It's not a qustion of being mean; it's a question of being the alpha pack leader. How old is she. My previous dog liked to shred any paper too, but she out grew it. It took persitent "no!" when she was caught in the act.

Not just for you drama. Walking a dog every day on a leash is an important thing. I know some people just let the dog out to relieve herself. But walking out away from the house on a leash (and that's important) does wonders. The dog bonds to you seeing you as part of its pack, it gives the dog excercise, it establishes hierarchy (you are in control with the leash and it gets used to responding to your direction), it allows the dog to not feel closed in within its territory (dogs can be psychologically over protective of their territory if it doesn't go out), and it stimulates the dogs sense of curiosity. It is the one thing I recommend to keep a dog psychologically balanced.

Virgil - Yes, indeed she is an Italian Greyhound. I am not the one that spoiled her..... and she IS spoiled rotten. If it were up to me she wouldn't even sleep in the house; never mind the bed.

Drama is right.... He was her man long before he was mine, and jealousy is only natural....specially in an animal with a brain the size of a grape. She's 10 years old, and we've been together for 4 years. In the 6 years prior to me coming along they lived alone together, and he was home all day every day for at least 2 of those years (suffering severe illness). She saw him through some very tough times and they are quite attached to one another; so I can't really come in and put my foot down or become the disciplinarian.

Littlewing - Sorry to hear about the neighborhood that you live/lived in; but if those bad things brought such a great dog into your life & your heart then at least some good came out tragedy. p.s. my dog has accepted me into her heart....... as her ARCH NEMESIS!!

Oh that would explain it. You know it might help to take her on daily walks like I mention above. Without your partner, just you and her for say ten to fifteen minutes per day. It would bond you together as a pack, while you being in the authority position. Her peeing on your side of the bed is probably her way of trying to superceed you in the pack hierarchy. I'm skeptical if dogs really get jealous. What we interpret as jealousy may be a positioning for power within the pack.

I've tried everything I can think of to get that dog to bond with me. I'm a smoker who only smokes outdoors; so she & I go for several solo walks every day that I'm not out to sea. I buy her special dog treats that she LOVES, and have forbidden my partner from giving them to her.... they are just from me to her. I give her lots of loving attention every day: petting, scratching behind her ears, playing fetch.... all to no avail. We get along fairly well on the rare occasions that we're alone together; but as soon as Bob shows up...... I'm the one in the doghouse, as far as she's concerned.

I think one major setback in our attempt at bonding is my job and the fact that I go away for weeks on end. As soon as she starts getting used to me, I sail away for a while. I guess she has abandonment and trust issues.

This is going to sound horrible; but...... She's 10 years old..... she can't live THAT MUCH longer..... I can out-last her. (I just hope my sanity can)
