It's a shadow - you can see it when light is cast at any angle other than directly above or under it, hence the reference to the need for "brightness" in order to see it.

Good catch, Night! Yeah, "in every season" would throw out a shadow, because many places have rainy seasons. But reflections show in mirrors or water. Besides when you turn away, your shadow turns with you. Not so with a reflection. Only spot in places where it may refelect.
