How does HAwthorne use the colors red, black, and gray to influence the reader's perception of the moral and emotional tone of The Scarlet Letter??

Read the first page of the Scarlet Letter. It lets you know that the book is not going to be a joyful one.
Ch. 1
"A throng of bearded men, in SAD-COLORED garments and GRAY, steeple-crowned hats, inermixed with woman, SOME WEARING HOODS, and others bareheaded, was assembled in front of a wooden edifice, the door which was HEAVILY timbered with oak, and STUDDED WITH IRON SPIKES.
Red, black, and gray aren't happy colors and I think Hawthrone uses that to his advantage to prove a point.
