I don't have a copy of Paadise Lost here, so I can't point out some places where Sattan comes off as heroic, but his refusal to accept defeat is an example of Satan being heroic, either that, or he is delusional. Look at the part where he makes the speech to all of the fallen. That is pretty good.

The catalogueing of the hero's allies is an convention of epic poetry that Miton applies to Stan in Paradise Lost. Compare the Milton's catalogue of demons (book 1, line 376) to the Beowulf Poet's catalogue of the hero's weapons (line 1442), Homer's catalogue of ships or Virgil's catalogue of warriors.* I don't have copies of the other two works on me, so you might have to so some digging for the relevant lines in those poems.

    * No Virgil, not you. The other one.
What is the use of a violent kind of delightfulness if there is no pleasure in not getting tired of it.

A washerwoman with her basket; a rook; a red-hot poker; th purples and grey-greens of flowers: some common feeling which held the whole together.

And remember that, however heroic Milton made Satan, it was in order to show that God was greater. Satan's misplaced pride is his essential feature, not his heroism.... even if he does get all the best speeches.

Maybe some of Milton's ambivalence is due to the fact that he was an Independant and one of the party that had brought down a king who believed that he was divinely appointed.
    Voices mysterious far and near,
Sound of the wind and sound of the sea,
Are calling and whispering in my ear,
    Whifflingpin! Why stayest thou here?
