I love both quotes, but the Conrad one is very powerful.

Why are you such a pessimist, Shout? Life can be good too. It's both a blessing and a burden. I'll stick with my William Faulkner one.

I love that kind of meloncholy, somewhat pessimistic stuff, although I don't think of it as pessimistic, just realistic.
the luminous grass of the prairie hides
feet lovely and still as sleeping doves,
porcelain bones strong enough to carry a life,
    but weighty and unmovable
    As black Dakota hills.

Why disqualify the rush? I'm tabled. I'm tabled.

I think this is the whole thing:

What is the use of a violent kind of delightfulness if there is no pleasure in not getting tired of it.

Here's a brief history of my avatars etc:

First I had Darth Vader and then I had some images that I made with my software (some ladybugs and a retarded/weird cartoon cat) and then I had some thumbnail of a LOTR poster that had Gandalf on it. Now I am back to another image of Darth Vader.

My first signature "Still round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate" is a Tolkien quote. That's not there anymore because I got tired of seeing it.

Now I have what Garrison Keillor says at the end of the Writers Almanac everday "Be well, do good work and keep in touch."

The thing about the honey and the bee is an aphorism that struck me as profound one day while on LitNet.

And "Man Overboard Alarm comes from the dark comedy Clay Pigeons. It's not my favorite Lester Long quote but I didn't want to put "some people just need killin'" on my signature. Also, "Barney, could you please not poke the body with a stick" and Barney's response "I was just seeing something..." I guess you'd have to be from here to understand why that is funny. It's the phrasing. It's a hick thing I guess.
"...if you weren't smart enough to get a pedophile in a dress to put a small amount of water on the child’s forehead, then what the eff did you think was going to happen?

I do like Hughes as well. His poems are mostly optimistic.
I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew.

Ive just added a new quote from Ravi Zacharias, who is a Christian apologist and author.
    It reiterates - 1 Corinthians 13:1
A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying in other words that he is wise today than yesterday - Alexander Pope

Conviction that is not under-girded by LOVE makes the possessor of that conviction obnoxious and the dogma possessed becomes repulsive - Ravi Zacharias.

I've just changed my avatar. It was tiresome looking at the same pic all the time. But have no fear, it's still strawberry shortcake.
I am the music floating free, I am the puppet trapped in the box... I am the cascades flowing tranquilly, I am the lava bursting from the mouth of the volcano... I am the rose blooming in a winter storm, I am the frost-bite on your finger in June... I am knowledge, I am ignorance... I am full of likenesses, I am full of contradictions.
