any HACKERS around??!!

Okay,here's the thing:
Yesterday I was googling something and there was a name of a site that caught my attention so I pressed it. All of the sudden my screen became black with blood drops filling the page, strong, annoying frightening music crashed my ears(reminds me of the Demons worshippers parties music). And then in severe red color there were these words written:
HACKED by The Darkness Ghost
And then he stated his email!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A dear one sitting besides me suggested we take his email coz we may need him in the futurebut then I'm not ready to see my PC being intruded ! not as if I have the Pentagon Papers but still there are some dear stuff I do not want to lose.It was really frightening . I do not know what he carries against this site! ! but I'm sure that this guy makes wonders wherever he goes. Hackers are interesting ,aren't they? I mean with all this intelligence and mastery upon the technological stuff.How can they do it!! I mean to upload an image from my PC to the internet is kinda hard thing for me to do and those people are hacking some highly secured sites for banks ….etc. We have a lot to learn,dn't we?!
Do we have any hackers around? Maybe with a girl hacker we can hack the boring thread entitled (just for boys).
Do you wish to have these abilities? And if you have them,are you going to use them to mess things up just for fun or you're gonna be one of the good hackers,if there any!

Well, there are hackers... and crackers:

Acc. to Wiktionary: hacker

1. Someone who hacks, or cuts with rough blows.
2. One who is intensely interested in learning and modifying the technical aspects of a system, particularly a computer and its software; one who hacks; a computer programmer who is largely or completely self-taught.
3. One who feels that all knowledge and information should be free and may be willing to hack into systems to promote this view.
4. A cracker; one who breaks into computer systems, especially with malicious or criminal intent

The sense meaning "one who is intensely interested ...", dating at least to the 1960's, is still current in the computing community. However, popular usage, including news accounts and television programs, tends overwhelmingly toward the cracker sense. Many in the hacker community (in the older sense) feel it is important to promote usage of the older sense, and find the cracker sense offensive, particularly since computer burglary and vandalism can be and often is done (which seems to be what befell the site miss tenderness describes) without any deep understanding or significant skill. One should, however, use the term with care in casual conversation, as it is easily misconstrued.

So, do I wish to have these abilities? Possibly. At the very least, I try to learn what I need to know to be able to defend myself. Question: How is breaking into other peoples computer domains different from committing burglary in "the real world"?

I see Claes pointed out the difference between a hacker and a cracker. I think "hacking" has become a catch all term but should be seperated from simply malicious activity. Learning how systems work and programming is one thing, and indulging in rude and malicious "cracking" is another.

Hackers are ok and crackers are the people who have such empty, meaningless lives that they have nothing better to do than devise worms, trojan horses and other ways to make other people's lives (and computers) miserable.


I am sorry that happened to you, miss t. Do you have firewall and antivirus programs running? They cannot make your computer invulnerable to threats, but they can help.


*edit* Oops, forgot to answer the question. Would I want super programming skills? Sure, why not. Then I would have the answer of how to fix problems like the one you describe, miss t. Indeed breaking into another person's computer system is very like petty burglary. (and I think my opinion of people who do stuff like that is pretty obvious by now, eh? )

Cales: very interesting. Now, I see the most used term to describe thses stuff is Hacker and not cracker! If it's an attempt by only those who want to give these activities more respectable(or acceptable)term ,then why this huge tendency towards using the word hacker wherever we go?I mean everybody uses the term hacker instead of the correct term,cracker?!

Oh, I guess I misunderstood some of what you wrote there, miss t. And I think the term "hacker" (as I wrote before) is more of a catch-all term. I guess it is sort of like when I have to blow my nose I say "I need a Kleenex" (which is a brandname--sort of a catch-all term) when I really mean "I need a tissue" which would be more accurate since I never buy Kleenex as that brand of tissues is too pricey.

Also, the term "hacker" would be in more common usage as a catch-all term by people who don't know the difference between a hacker and a cracker.

I suppose that is caused mainly due to a mixture of ignorance and/or sheer disregard from the media.

Oh, it's not a major issue as far as I am concerned, but the fact that those different interpretetions do create a good deal of confusion from time to time prompted me to point it out.

This is probably because most would interpret the sentence "The Pentagon's computer system has been vandalized by crackers" to mean that some white men have spray-painted their initials on the servers.
