Question Help finding a story, can't remember anything but the basic plot...

Hello all, I am new here and I'm hoping someone can help me find a classic story. I would say most every person of the civilized world has at least heard this one before, so it shouldn't be too hard. Anyway, what basically happens is two friends fall for one girl. One is handsome and witless, the other is not much to look at but poetic at heart. The ugly duckling helps his friend win the girls heart by telling him what to say to her, and after the handsome one dies he reveals to her that it was he who said those sweet things. Can anyone tell me the title and author of this one? Thank you in advance you kind stranger.

Sounds like Cyrano de Bergerac to me.

I enjoyed Steve Martin's remake of that story in his Movie "Roxanne"

Thanks a lot, that one was bugging me. A few years ago, my friend was over at my house chatting on MSN messenger with this girl. He was about as smooth as a pine cone, so I told him what to say and they ended up in a relationship lasting about three months. Anyway, just the other day I was walking to a concert just up the road from me, and she happened to
dve by and offer me a ride. I kept thinking of that story, and at the end of the night I asked her if she wanted to hang out sometime. She said "I don't care", which is good enough for me, and gave me her number. Sorry, just had to share that story with someone. Anyway, I know this is off topic but I could use some advice, how long should I wait before calling her? And while I am annoying you all with dumb questions, can someone tell me how to turn this overwrite feature off? Heheh, thanks.

    someone help me out here?!
you should absolutely call within the week. i would want a call within a day or two, but maybe you want to go slowly and casually chat it up with her, call in two or three days.
    good luck, gatsby.

Don't worry about all that! Just call her if you want to get together. If you don't, than don't! Its that simple. Oh yeah and be yourself. Chicks like that better then if they can tell that your fronting to try and make them like you more.
...Also baby duck hat would be good for parties.

Thanks you guys, for answering my self indulgent question. I'm not trying to front though, I know I can woo her with my words , but Ive only asked out two people in the past, and with one of them I had to repeat the question because I mumbled it. So see, I'm trying to take a stronger, more confident approach now. Anyway, thanks for the advice, and the info.

just don't pitch your voice higher than normal. my love has a voice that's so deep it sounds like a mumble sometimes - they're always better than falsettos
enjoy and have a good time

    Ah, you smoove opportunist, you.

Two bits of advice: First, don't take anyone else's advice too blindly or you'll be taking on the other role in yer own little Cyrano.
Secondly, some more advice not to follow would be to not wait too long. I was supposed to call up an old buddy I ran into. That was like 2 1/2 years ago now and I get the feeling that perhaps I have now waited a wee bit too long.

Aw man! And I really wanted to know what happened! Perhaps he called and she replied "Who's this?! What conversation?! I don't even remember you!!!" LOL Or perhaps they hit it off for a while, but then went sour and they broke up. Being that he hasn't posted anything of this topic, I'm guessing the former.
