    Israel Affording

he strove with the fist of the righteous
he straddled the stones of the ford
the angel made rope of his sinews
to hang out the word of the lord

the years passed for him and his people
they passed over early and late
they blanched at the words of the sibyl
    each delicate hammer of fate

and here as we watch from the circle
we wonder at what has been paid
what worth is it for a miracle
when all of the children are dead?

erh, I've got no idea what your poem is all about but I like the general flow and rhythmof it
except this line: what worth is it for a miracle, which sounds a bit wobbly to me...

Hi everybody, say hello to your newest member, James Wallace. As for this poem I don't understand the main idea or its relationship with Israel.

    Hi!

Lanaia74: Thanks, but I'm not sure what those unusual smileys(?) mean... :-)

SleepyWitch, James Wallace: It's about the Biblical tale of the patriarch Jacob, who has a wrestling match with the angel of the Lord at a stream. He survives (although injured in the sinews/tendons of the thigh) and is given the name Israel, which means 'he struggles with God'. It's also about the origin, in a mythical sense, of the state of Israel. Was it worth it? That's a hotly-debated topic in these darkening days.
