This is a short story by Tolstoy. Was`wondering if anyone has read it and what their thoughts are. It can be read on this website here:

Welcome, Kaz! Yes, I have read the story, just a short while ago and it was very depressing and tragic. There's a glimmer of hope there near the end and you think Ivan's patience and faith are going to come to fruition and then he dies...kind of leaves you feeling a little cheated.

I have read the story and i simply love it even though i agree it is very melancholy. But this is the fact i have experienced with all his stories that i have read ( and i haven't read too many)- that they are very subtle and tragic but perhaps this is what makes him such a great writer.
Only he can depict pathos in such a way that they seem very real rather than melodramatic.
Existence is not only temporary, it is pointless.
