Wink Question on Pride and Prejudice versions

    Greetings,

I am reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but find that the book I am reading does not have adequate explanatory notes to facilitate my understanding of the times and context in which the book was written.

Can anyone recommend a good version/publisher which might help me? Or, does anyone know the most popular/bestselling version?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

    Hi ewilson,

You might like to try the Norton Critical Edition; it has extended notes, criticism, etc. At any rate, that's the one my uni course recommends; the Penguin would also be good. How are you enjoying the book?

Welcome to the Forum. I'm sure you'll love your time here.

    Pride and Prejudice book

Thanks for the suggestion, Miss Darcy -- and thanks for the warm welcome.

Since the time of my post, I received the same suggestion from others on a different site, so I purchased the Norton Critical Edition. I finished the book last week. It is great -- provides details the movie could not, given time limits.

Now I am reading, North and South, by Elizabeth Gaskell, also Norton edition. I had recently purchased the DVD, which I love, so decided to read the book for details.

Have you read or seen N&S?

Jeepers creepers, so many threads I have overlooked in my absence!
Hello, ewilson, welcome to the forum. Years ago, I read the Penguin edition of Pride and Prejudice (and Sense and Sensibility), and definitely trust by it, though, I have no doubt, as Miss Darcy mentioned, the superiority of the Norton edition - their copies always have a lot of good information. Bantam Classics, sometimes, also have some decent critical notes that I may recommend.
    Good luck!

    Pride and Prejudice book

Thanks Mono for the welcome and for the suggestions. The North and South that I am currently reading is a library copy, so when I purchase my own, I will research the suggested editions.
