Hello, I am new to this forum, and I am honored that I am permitted to contribute to it. I feel that it is sad in our day and age that people do not read great literature as they had done in the age before television, movies, and recorded everything. Believe me, I love movies, and I have an extensive DVD collection; however, I love to read, and I love to read the classics. I also love reading aloud. That is a great passtime. Welcome David. I am sure you will enjoy lit net. It is a great passtime. As to your statement that people read more great literature before TV and movies, I doubt it. I don't know if there is any more or less as a percentage, but the general population is more educated today, with more people going to college more are exposed to great literature. Who knows if they follow through with it afterwards, but that's a decsion based on likes and dislikes, probably no different than years ago. I don't like to romanticize the past.

Virgil, You have said a really good thing. If people like movies, it is their own likes and dislikes and there is nothing wrong in watching movies and not reading literature, in my opinion.

I can relate to that, except that I don't limit myself to the classics. Don't get me wrong: I love the classics too, but I'm just as happy reading contemporary writing. Perhaps some of it will be considered classics one day?

I also love reading aloud. That is a great passtime.

So it is. We share that pastime as well.
