Climate experiment project

My brother mentioned to me a certain project BBC and Oxford University are doing. I got interested and searched for more details. I think it might be fun taking part in it. Shame they don't advise using laptops for the experiment... though I might go for it anyway, it really sounds interesting. I'm in no way advertising anything or whatever, I just think it's an interesting idea and am providing links for anyone else interested.

I'm still not getting it... What are they exactly finding out by putting that thingy in your comp? What does it do? And what if it messes up your comp?
(I did read the page but I'm slow... and it doesn't seem to be so clearly explained but maybe it's me...)
