I think the Disney version did a good job of creating the lusciously fantastical look we think we see in dreams, and the combined live action/3D stop animation version by Jan Svankmayer added a nightmarish quality which the Alice books lend themselves to, even if it wasn't originally intended.
My favourite, no contest, has got to be the 1999 version with Tina Majorino. The actors are all superb, and the whole movie has a beauty to it reminiscent of Tenniel's coloured illustrations for The Nursery Alice. The Alice in this one manages to capture the character perfectly without being annoying (ahemDISNEYahem) and the costumes and settings are wonderful. The music is also a highlight: I have the soundtrack, and it was composed for the film, and has a very grand Victorian feel, full of emotion. Manages to be more surreal than Disney's version, even though they had animation on their side.
Disney's version: Ugh. Would be passable, but it could have been crazier instead of just sweet and Disneyish. Alice looks like she's made out of sugar and unicorns, and her prissy little voice annoys me to no end. Off with her head. (There is another animated version I like better: It's Russian and they have it on YouTube. It's much more random, and I love it. They even take those little trips into Alice's mind when she's pondering about children who burn their hands on pokers and stuff)
The Fiona Fullerton musical looks okay but I have only seen a few clips. Natalie Gregory version is entertaining, but Alice has a bit of that Disneyfied prissyness to her in it, and the songs are kind of annoying and fastforwardable... Jonathan Miller version looks pretty surreal and dark, but again I have only seen a few clips...
Jan Svankmeyer... W. T. F. I think I enjoyed it, it's the craziest thing ever, but doooon't show this to children. They would definitely be scarred for life in many ways. Seriously.
and last of all... TIM BURTON =) it looks great, even though it's more of a sequel... the only bone I have to pick with it is that Alice shrinks out of her clothes when she drinks the potion... it may be a cool idea the first time she shrinks, and she dresses herself in her sleeve or something, but what happens when she grows again??? I will have to watch the movie and see what I think of this idea.......
