    Smile Any thoughts on....

William Blake and 'Songs of Innocence & Experience'?

I'm studying his poems at the moment and I'd love to hear your views and interpretations of his poems

Blake's poems were all attacks on 19th century British government, especially in their labour policies. My favourite from Songs of Innonce is the Chimney Sweep. It was through this poem that Blake managed to present the plight of children of the Industrail Revolution to the ignorant public. He did this in many of his other poems, as did other Romantic poets. They attacked every aspect of the corrupt governments of the 19th century.

    Thanks.

I agree, most prominently he makes attacks on the church, and their views of 'the meek shall inherit the earth'. The Chimney Sweep is one of my favourites, I like comparing the one from innocence and the one from experience. Interesting comparisons can be drawn from the tiger and the lamb too.
