Now if only Switzerland will demonstrate they prefer skiing to football..... (Of course Argentina has some ski areas, too. The highest mountain outside of Asia -- Aconcagua -- is in Argentina.) i think Messi would have been a world class slalom skier.

Maradona always dissed the "Messi is the GOAT" take, claiming he had never won the World Cup. Of course now he has. Also, the Champions league has as much talent as the World Cup ever since the Bosman Ruling. Maradona was a great player, but Messi has had 15 seasons as good as Maradona's best 3 or 4.

The Hand of God would be ruled out be VAR -- which is too bad. It was a lot of fun.

I had to look up The Hand of God Fiasco. That’s hilarious. As they say — If ya ain’t cheatin’, ya ain’t tryin’. Sometimes ya just gotta punch that soccer ball, or give the curling stone an extra little flick, or take the subway for a few stops during a marathon. I will never forget Rosie Ruiz’s name, but I’ve got no idea who actually won the Boston Marathon that year.

France v Spain last night. The former played as individuals, the latter as a team.

Now all the conspiracy theories in full flow regards the England v Argentina match: the chosen ref, VAR, and will the soccer genius make a telephone call to FIFA?

He likes Harry, that's for sure. I'd be more wary about the fan base in the stands; hope they all get patted down... at least alcohol will be limited. Should be a momentous sociological event.

    Sheesh!
Stinks to be England right now — Ya get kicked out of the semis. But for the title of Third Banana ya still gotta play another match. And it’s against the Frogs.

I despair. Back in 1966 Sir Alf Ramsey called the Argentinian team "Animals."

They appear not to have changed in yesterday's match.

The first 15-20 minutes were a succession of fouls and the referee was unable, or unwilling to control their behaviour.

Not a game of football as I understand it.

And at the end there was unfurled on the pitch a banner re the Falkland Islands. Let's see if FIFA can follow their own rules, or whether there will be another phone call.

Didn't watch it... shameful though. "All the world's a political stage." - attributed to many, and more's the shame.
