So............ looks like first link ( to Part 1 ) was flagged as persona non grata by the "banned" flag... it was a link to a pix of a Firebird flying over a pond near the woods for the ekphrastic poem I wrote... with these edits in mind I'll try to repost in the Nonsensical poem thread and see how it goes.

Ok... chopping up my original post and not including links...

legend of the firebird

no one knows from whence it
came for ancient is the lore of
when the firebird first appeared
scouring the swampland and
forests with flame - a relentless
incandescence slaughtering
and scattering what remained
of tribes and families that day

from the perspective of the
firebird it was of necessity -
a need to make a nest with
which to brood her eggs in peace
- soon hatchlings kept her busy
in flight over great distances
to feed her innocent little ones

retribution, an invention of man,
soon followed when a lone warrior
returned to his ancestral grounds,
steeling his courage he butchered
the nestlings - using their remains
to conceal himself as he sought to
destroy their mother upon its return

tears, amber-red, like an angry
sun filtered through the eyes of the
firebird in flight when the deceit was
laid bare below her - and with the
realization of the futility of striving
with man she abandoned her nest
and became lost once more to legend

red are the waters that remain
of the watershed whence these
tidings came to pass - a testament
to the tenacity of dour men, or per-
haps the blood of innocents -+-*+

Word Can: grasp, access, experiment, confetti, fling, eggshell

Youth: a series of experimental offenses

Guess I was in another experimental phase of my teenage years,

thus having absconded with some of the neighbor lady’s eggs

after accessing her coop by hopping a backyard fence

I found myself grasping an imagined Fabergé egg - when in truth

just a bespeckled egg mostly bereft of its dregs

hence I flung it into into the air and shouldered my dad's 30-06 with uncovered ears

... then BOOM! ha! bet you could of heard it all the way in Duluth!

it littered the yard and my hair with eggshell confetti - and praise be - it wasn't my last youthful offense

My Word Can poem from 6/6/2024: salty, countdown, wings, quiet, pane, vague, total, asleep

salty mouthed “too”

an existence within a cage
for a salty mouthed cockatoo is droll
for one whose wings are clipped

thus flight is impossible which is perhaps best
for a window pane is a bird’s bane -
no reason to be vague about it

best to be quiet while the “too” is asleep
for when the dog hears the mailman’s rattle
the fan is hit without a countdown

I read Leave of Grass years ago and misunderstood it. Am re-reading and now understanding it. Was hoping to find a discussion of the book here but, I guess, nobody was interested.

I think log in difficulties and spam are the reason of the disappearances of several users. But the banned notice mustn't be taken serious. It is probably the result of a passing instability of the site. Taylor, Sancho and myself sometimes receive banning notices.

I like Whitmann and never discussed his poetry. However my sight at present is not so good, so I can neither read nor write very long posts.

In case you can remember or if someone else would like to chime in, I have a question: there are repeated references to open display of affection, hand holding, kissing, fondling, and amorous attachments throughout many of the poems. All done out on the streets, a tavern, the woods. None challenged by law enforcement or by disaffected people of the Victorian and prudish society of that time. I wonder ~ were these mere fantasies of the poet or, were they reports of actually open displays of affection? People today are still physically attacked for engaging in such open displays of affection - I thought no one would dare challenge of the conventions of that society without risking considerable retribution from an outraged and prejudiced society.

So, were those real displays or mere fantasies of the poet?
