about Big Brother

One thing I really love about this book is the character of Big Brother. To me, Big Brother represents total authority and totalitarianism. It amazes me how he has no set code of law, yet he has so much control over everyone. To me he also represents trickery. he totally blinds the proles, the only ones who are able to overthrow his government, using tele-screens. I also his method of two minute of hate have a lot to do with his total control, because it gives the people a common enemy and also a sense of nationalism. Although Big Brother is a truly evil character, there is no doubt that he is a master of illusion.

Big Brother really is an amazing figure in the way that even though he has not been seen in the book (from what I recall), you know he is there. It makes you wonder if he really does exist, or if he is just fake character made by the government to control the people. He represents an absolute monarch, much like Louis XIV or Phillip II. He has complete control over his people and there is no one with power stronger than he has. The 2 Minutes Hate truly does affect his status as a leader. It shows him pinning everyone against other evil sources, taking it away from himself.
