As I was reading 1984, I came across the part where Winston is at the antique shop and is talking to Mr. Charrington. The song that Charrington sang as a child is one that notes all the major churches in London. This song comes up later in the reading, and I wondered, what is the significance of this, what is the meaning behind this song? Is it in any connection to "If things were better before?"

The connection of were things better before was that they had the freedom of religion and the freedom to believe what they choose which the no longer have. The reason I believe the song is in there is that the song is shows that there used to many places that they could go to but no there are none and not to many people remember them.
