The great Indian leader of the Taino tribe resisted Spanish subjugation of Hispaniola and later Cuba. He fought as long as he could but he was captured and sentenced to death. At his execution the priests laid out the two alternatives he had before him: conversion to Christianity ( i.e. baptism) before execution and then celestial paradise or rejection of Christianity and hence eternal perdition in hell. Hatuey asked the priest where do the Spanish go when they die. The priest answered that if they are baptized the Spanish go to heaven. "Well do not baptize me," Hatuey remarked. "I prefer to go to hell."

Now today they make a harmless icon of this rebel --- putting his visage on beer bottles and other beverages. How many of those who drink these beverages know the story of Hatuey???

We are all destined to someone else's hell so I think Hatuey made the right choice.

However, don't forget the atheist's hell that they bring upon those they find expendable such as done by the Khmer Rouge. One good thing about the atheist hell is that it is only a temporary execution. Christians are more devilish in that their executions go on forever.

My problem, Red Terror, is that I don't find your religion (and I consider atheism to be a religion) to be a better alternative.

This story reminded me of similar themes where heaven is rejected for more or less good reasons. You could call this theme rejecting someone else's heaven because you reject them.

Another theme is to reject heaven because it would be hell to go there. I remember hearing a story of a man and his dog who died and went to heaven. At the pearly gates there was a sign that said, "No Dogs Allowed". The gatekeeper said the man could go in and encouraged him to do so otherwise his opportunity to enter would be lost. He decided not to and went away with his dog. As he left the gatekeeper saw the dog transform into Krishna (you may substitute whichever diety you want). In rejecting heaven he gained heaven.

Another theme is to reject heaven because heaven is everywhere you make it. I remember hearing a story of a man who was good and should have gone to heaven but when he died he was sent to hell by mistake. He figured this was what he deserved and his spent his time in hell pleasantly. The other inhabitants were glad he was there. Eventually the error was discovered and angels went to the man apologizing saying that they made a mistake and he should go with them to heaven. The other inhabitants didn't want him to go but they encouraged him to do so for his own good. He decided to stay. He had made friends and heaven was everywhere.

And there is the theme that heaven is very boring and if you want to have any fun at all you should opt for hell.
