Any night last week;
I was out chasing numbers
For my own Drake Equation.
First, choose a baseline:
Say three hundred million;
Divide it in half,
Extract a generous ten percent,
Then narrow the field—
By age, by attraction,
By marital status,
By IQ and geniality,
By distribution and desperation.
I've sifted those sands
In search of a granule,
But it's far more likely
E.T. will touch down
On the National Mall.
So don't bother calling,
I won't be in . . .
Just cry for me later.
