An interesting title. It's not a command for Sally to lie down (since it's not Lie Down Sally) but for someone else (since it's not Lay Yourself Down Sally) to lay Sally down. The unanswered question of course is: "Where do you you want me to lay down Sally?"

Are you sure about this?
It's interesting to note the grammar for sure, and a lot of us get those two mixed up at times, but the next few lines are,
"Lay down Sally,
rest here in my arms,
I've been waiting, all night long just to talk to you."
That would seem to indicate the opposite, grammar notwithstanding.
I just have to laugh at that word - notwithstanding.
