    Fog Delay

    Fog Delay

    Fog surrounds the great Midwest,
Green tomatoes coveting red, too soon
    This chilly blanket.

Children half way to the bus,
Looking back at summer, "Don't just stand there,
    Come with me."

Into the haze they must go,
Not knowing what lies ahead, trusting their
    Navigation.

Soon the sun with open eyes
Will clear away the haze, to send its colors,
    Ripe with learning.

    Red tomatoes on a plate,
Children home to tell, the fog has lifted,
    Where is my fork?

    Very nice!

Some folks love summer and hope it will hang on. Others (such as yours fooly) are never sorry to see the heat and humidity finally depart, ushering in the invigorating fall.

In my neck o' the woods we should be grateful that this year's summer hasn't been oppressive as it can be (such as it was in 2013.) Even so, amateur gardeners around here have long noted that expecting green tomatoes to turn red is a pretty dicey proposition, given the relatively short growing season in this zone.

That's why the "tomato" imagery in your poem works so well. Likewise the lines about schoolchildren. I've noticed that school has been starting earlier than was customary in my youth. Back then, we never had to go "back to school" until after Labor Day. And our parents never allowed us to buy school supplies until the teacher told us what we needed!

See how evocative your piece is? Keep up the good work.

And don't be a stranger around the LitNet.

    Your old pal,
    Auntie

Thank you, Auntie. Nice to 'see' you. Heard anything from Prince or Fire?
