    Farewell, My Lovely (1975)

Once again Robert Mitchum takes on the part of Philip Marlowe in another filmed adaptation of a Raymond Chandler novel.
Set in Los Angeles it involves Mitchum in the search for a recently released prisoner's girlfriend whom he hasn't seen since being sent down for seven years following a robbery. There are the usual shenanigans involving thuggery and double dealing, with a surprise ending that's impossible to guess although it does explain all of the confusing elements of the story.
Mitchum is good in this type of role where his world weary cynical private eye act helps to carry the improbability of the plot. Sylvester Stallone ( dare I say Sly?) has a bit part as a thug, and the femme fatale is Charlotte Rampling who, given her propensity for disporting her minuscule superstructure in numerous supposedly glamorous roles, would be more appropriately named Charlotte Dumplings.

I'm sick and don't have the energy to do anything but watch movies, so that's what I'm doing. So far I've watched Akira (so-so) and The Wind Rises, which was fantastic. I haven't cried in a few years, but that one almost got me going. It wasn't a tearjerker though, it was a very subtle movie.

Spirit of the Beehive. What the hell. You're not supposed to be able to make a movie that good.

This movie is a good reason not to join a writers' group. All these characters messed up, but it looked like Henry Obert (played by Chris Klein) messed up the least. He seemed to be the only one who should have been published, but listening to the plot of his novel, I don't think I'd want to read it.

    Saving Mr. Banks: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2140373/

This is the story behind the creation of Disney's Mary Poppins movie. "Let's Go Fly A Kite" and "Tuppence a Bag" now have added meaning for me because of this movie.

This is about people trying to disprove paranormal events and then running right into a closet psychic. It didn't make a lot of sense and I was unable to empathize with the characters although the plot was cute.

I must be in a depressed mood to give out 3s so easily, but I actually feel pretty good.

'Where the buffalo roam' very very good. Murray is brilliant as always.

    Project X: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1636826/

After starting the movie I realized that I saw it before especially when the parents interact with the teenagers planning the mother of all parties at the beginning.

You would think that watching people get drunk and jump off the house into the pool in the backyard would be boring, but there is enough story going on to keep one's interest. One amazing scene is when the teenagers get word from their kung-fu security guards that the police are coming. The entire party moves to the back yard and is silent. It's incredible. By the time the police come the second time, it's too late. They are now celebrities.

Any movie that I would enjoy a second time deserves a score of 10/10.

La stanza del figlio (2001). It’s an Italian move by a director called Nanni Moretti. When I first got it I wasn't sure if I would like it, but once I started watching it, I found it to be absolutely amazing.

The ending was simply wonderful. If you can find it I highly recommend that you watch it.

And of course I give it a rating of 10/10. Here is the IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208990/

Her (2013) with Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Rooney Mara. Actually I am still watching it right now, and for some reason it reminded me of this forum, and well I guess here I am. And it's really good so far, though it's making me a bit uncomfortable in some inexplicable way (probably because it hits a wee bit too close to home) because a lot of my correspondence is online now, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

    The Seventh Veil (1945)

This story of a young female concert pianist who inexplicably tries to commit suicide and then refuses to communicate with anyone stars James Mason at his silky best as the Svengali like guardian of his protege Anne Todd. Although he mistreats her badly, she has affairs with a young fellow student at the Royal Academy of Music and also with the society painter who is hired to paint her portrait. It is the psychiatrist, brilliantly acted by the charismatic Herbert Lom, who dedicates himself to uncovering the reason for her attempted suicide and refusal to speak. The reason is finally revealed as suppressed feelings for one of the three men in her life: no prizes for guessing who but that's women for you. The music is Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto and Beethoven's Pathetique sonata so it's romance writ large but, despite that, the performances more than compensate for the scenario. 7/10

I'm not very big of movie-watching, let alone contemporary cinematography. I tend to avoid anything that's made nowadays in movies and books if they're fiction. Now, documentaries and non-fiction books are another story. They might have useful data.

    Dead-end Drive In (1986)

Possibly one of the best films I've ever watched. Top-notch to me yet the Scottish girl (she actually speaks gaidhlig: Scotland's REAL language) who watched with me said she saw nothing in it. Quite uninteresting, according to her.
