I'm quite enjoying the film adaptation of "Never let me go" on TV just now. There are turns of phrases in the narrative that sound like beautiful poetry that would probably be lost in the (rather large) book.
The story is a slow burner, and of course could be seen as allegorical as well as an SF tale.
Is the book worthwhile?
Yes, the book is definitely worthwhile reading, sandy.
As is often the case, I thought the book was superior to the film, as much as I enjoyed the film. Ishiguro is a masterful plain prose-style writer, so if you responded to the language in the film, I'm sure you'll enjoy reading the novel. It's a beautifully written book, poignant without being sentimental, which is always a fine line to tread. And like you, I was taken by the SF aspect, and would say I enjoyed it more than other of his books I've read such as the more famous The Remains of the Day.
Find time for it over Christmas as I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Oh I really enjoyed the book, read it a few years ago. I haven't seen the movie but it has been on my 'to watch list' for while. I guess some of the surprising elements from the book will be lost cause you have seen the movie but a lot of details gained so I definitely say read the book. I never really saw it as Sci-fi, don't know why cause I love sci-fi.
