I wondered if someone were to film an updated version, it would be set in China. They have been undergoing a phase of heavy industrialisation. I understand many industrial Chinese cities suffer from pollution. I wonder if many Chinese feel they have adopted a severe economic code, which although profitable is hard on the workers. I wonder whether there are officials like Gradgrind and bosses like Bounderby around in China. If the book was updated to modern China, I wonder how it would be received.
