Probably, it could have been one of mineI was eating in a posh restaurant once and got a staple stuck in the roof of my mouth. I told the waiter and he whisked my plate away faster than you could say salmonella. I'd already eaten half of it but he came back with a whole new meal. It was hard work, but I ate it all, and had a pudding

I think I'd be inclined to sort the mendacious coworker out, in no uncertain terms. I own a sjambok, which is particularly effective as a means of corrective therapy. I would invite the new coworker to watch.
