Thread: I am going to read Pynchon. where to start?

I am going to read Pynchon. where to start?

Knowing a foreign language in Russia is a bit of a luxury so people who do know enough to hold a conversation with a teletubby tend to be dismissive towards domestic literature, if only to shout "hey, I know western authors, too." So all talk about modern Russian literature will eventually end up with someone telling you Limonov and Sorokin are copying "the American beatniks, primarily Burroughs", Linor Goralik is "an archetypical confessional poet" while Pelevin "does Pynchon both in his works and in his personality mystification thing".

Since I like Pelevin very much I thought I must read this Pynchon dude as well.

Where do you start with him and what should you know before you do?

For Pelevin it is Russian culture and history (what you get in a Russian school is enough), certain underground writers like Venedikt Yerofeyev, Buddhist memes, computer scientist debates from the 1990s and such pop culture memes as the Pokemanz, the Orcs and the Vampires. The covers to his books are nescessarily Pop Art although we never had any of the persiflaged 1950s comic books.

Several criteria one could use to decide. Gravity's Rainbow is widely considered his best. WWII history is the essential background. If one likes to read authors chronologically, then begin with V, which is at least as twisted and labyrinthine as GR. Or one could start with something shorter and more accessible rather than making a big commitment to start. In this case, I would recommend Vineland. Background to this would be Northern California counterculture and drug culture (Traditionally and perennially known for its fine marijuana crop.)

    honestly.

    V. is his first, and its the best one to start with. Its my favourite so far, and i have read the crying lot of 49, vineland, and inherent vice.

I am saving gravity's rainbow, mason and dixon, and against the day, as those are his 3 most ambitious and brilliant from most of what i have heard from like-minded fans.

    V. is my whole hearted recommendation.

I highly recommend beginning with his short story "Entropy." It is a short piece, but it is a great precursor for the types of devices Pynchon will employ and augment throughout his career.
"J'ai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage."
    - Rimbaud

    "Il est l'heure de s'enivrer!
Pour n'être pas les esclaves martyrisés du Temps,
    enivrez-vous;
    enivrez-vous sans cesse!
De vin, de poésie ou de vertu, à votre guise."
    - Baudelaire

Crying of Lot 49 was very good. Tried Against the Day but gave up. Pelevin: which is better Blue Lantern or Homo Zapiens?
