    Hiatus: The Philosophical Meaning

"We are likely to be disconcerted by . . . hiatuses of thought" (Edmund Wilson).

does anyone understand the meaning of hiatus in this quote?

The difference between the theoretical and the practical. I am not disconcerted by it at all. It's perfectly practical that we must propose and then dispose.

A hiatus of thought implies a lack of thought.
“the sense of being which in calm hours arises, we know not how, in the soul, is not diverse from things, from space, from light, from time, from man, but one with them and proceeds obviously from the same source.... Here is the fountain of action and of thought....

a lack of thought? is it possible one does not think? I am assuming part of being a human is to think . we never cease to think unless one is sedated or not alive right?

i think you can come very close to it. but i think Edmund Wilson is referring to hiatuses of critical thinking, though it would help to know the context.

I would consider deep meditation to be a hiatus of thought.
