    Poetic prose in modern literature?

Do any of you believe that a writer, in this age, can write with a style akin to Nabokov, Joyce, Mishima, or Proust, and still be successful?
These writers are my top influences, and I fear that, if I were ever to seek success as a writer, I would not be able to get published.
    Any thoughts?

Poetic prose has always been out of the mainstream of literature. Thomas Wolfe is the best American writer who wrote in that style, and he died ninety-two years ago.
Dostoevsky gives me more than any scientist.

I wouldn't worry too much about this if you can do whatever you do, well.
I'm not a fiction writer though, this is just my opinion.

I think you should ask yourself which came first poetry or prose and I think you will find that poetry came first.
whether one should combine the two is entirely dependable on the skills of the writer and on whether they feel it is second nature to them or not.

Why second nature? Why not first? Second nature is biblical: "We shall burn it into their hearts..." ~ St. Peter.
