    Best Ulysses guide

Hey guys, I read Ulysses straight through "cold" and will be returning to it soon with a guide. I loved it but now I feel a guide will allow me to squeeze a lot more out of it. Any recommendations?

I'd keep reading it cold. Remember that Joyce wrote Ulysses after he said, "history is a nightmare from which I'm trying to wake up."

I don't see the point in reading it cold again as I'm unlikely to pick up any additional nuances of my own accord that I missed the first time around.

I read it "cold" along to the audiobook: 20+ CDs. That helped immensely, 'specially knowing that Joyce was a singer & wrote that novel as if to be sung, or @least spoken aloud.
No American troops were harmed during the Watergate cover-up.

Ulysses Annotated by Gifford is the standard resource, I believe.

Yep, Ulysses Annotated is a good resource, as are Stuart Gilbert's Ulysses: A Study and Harry Blamires' The New Bloomsday Book

Actually, that's what Stephen first states in the "Nestor" episode of the novel.

I highly recommend Frank Delaney's re:joyce podcast. One episode a week, and he takes it line by line. He's not very far through, so far, but if you've read it once it could well provide the extra depth you are looking for.

Excellent point. Mr. Delaney sometimes speculates a little, but it is a very entertaining and informative resource for reading the novel.
