"O Sun, to tell thee how I hate thy beams" - Milton's Satan

Am I the only person on this earth who despises sunny days? I once had a doctor tell me I'm allergic to the sun. I am genuinely gladdened by an overcast sky. June, July and August are the months I enjoy least. Every person I know welcomes the arrival of Summer with jubilation. A "nice" day means a sunny day. My attitude seems very strange and I sometimes wonder if I might just be the only one.

    "Busy old fool, unruly Sun,
    Why dost thou thus,
Through windows, and through curtains call on us?
Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run?
    Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide
    Late school-boys, and sour 'prentices,
Go tell court-huntsmen that the King will ride,
    Call county ants to harvest offices;
Love, all alike, no season knows, nor clime,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time."

    - Donne

It looks like there is such a thing as photodermatitis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photodermatitis

I usually enjoy the sun, but long exposures can make me tired.

I used to get small white spots on my ears from excess sun exposure. Hasn't happened in years though. I had a severe case of sun stroke when I was 12 years old. Maybe my antipathy towards the sun somehow originated with that.

Its like I have seasonal affective disorder in reverse. My mood goes down in late Spring and all through Summer and then bounces back in Fall and Winter. I've never heard of anyone else who is like this.

I have no idea why this is for you. I suppose some people prefer to be indoors studying or reading. My grandmother, who is 94, has always preferred the indoors even in the summer. She'll sit by the window, but she never had a desire to sit in the sun or sit on the beach. She likes to read the newspaper or do puzzles.

My younger sister gets a skin rash from too much sun exposure- white spots. But it doesn't bother her other than that. She is a farmer and spends most of her day in the sun. She enjoys the sun.

I however, practically live in a glass house and still complain I don't get enough sun. I am often vitamin D defiant, so the summer is the best time of year for me. I sit in the sun on the beach or in the garden. I crave the sun and am most happy when I spend a lot of time in it.

I guess it's more common than I realized. Interesting that one's mood also changes.

When I was a teenager working at a summer camp, I remember one of the campers had photodermatitis. Poor girl broke out in a horrible, painful rash and she would cry. I have no idea what on earth possessed her parents to send her to a camp where the kids were outside ALL DAY.
I'm weary with right-angles, abbreviated daylight,
Waiting for a winter to be done.
Why do I still see you in every mirrored window,
In all that I could never overcome?

beautiful post Darcy what a brilliant idea then to start a thread by backing it up with a poem loving the idea

well as far as the sun is concerned I have to say I am a big fan. I was born in June so that makes sense and the other thing is that I was born and brought up by the sea, the med, and that even more confirms to why I think the sun is a genius of its own right.
I am sorry to hear you cannot tolerate the sun for it has indeed many beneficial properties.
    it may never try
but when it does it sigh
    it is just that
    good
    it fly

Oh how I despise the sun and heat! You are not alone in this. I get a lot of nagging about my nagging about the sun, if that makes sense.
For some reason when you say you don't like something most people enjoy they think you are lying, that is my experience anyway. I hide away in my kitchen on sunny days or under a big umbrella.

Thus so far in my part of England we have had two and a half days of sun this year! So when it does come yes I like it. It's not just the sun it's the light in the morning. One of the worst feelings in the world is having to get up in the cold and dark, go to work, then come back in the cold and dark. Getting up in the morning and work = two of the worst evils combined. The sun acts as an antidote to that and usually the light means holiday which equals freedom and so satisfaction.

My ancestors are mostly from the British Isles and Germany, so that's probably why I have this aversion to the sun.

Its good to know I'm not the only one!

I still wouldn't mind living in sunny places like California or Australia though. It would probably just take me while to get used to it.

Well, the sun here on the ice is too much for my taste so I think I'll stick to this part of the world. This was the sunniest April in years so summer is not starting well for me.

Spring has so far here been glorious. It is almost June and we've been getting rain everyday. I love it.
