What is your utopia?

I have a very exciting idea for a series of stories involving utopias. I'm curious if any of you have thought about what your ideal society would be ?

Just answer the question. What's your utopia?

Basically, what I'm trying to do is compile a list of every possible Utopian society. So far I have;

-Everyone is rich
-Everyone is immortal and perpetually in their prime.
-World Peace
-No hunger
-Emotionless cerebral version of humanity.
-Universal genius. Everyone's a genius.
-Everyone is evolved and superhuman.
-Technology does all the hard work.
-Universal religion/spirituality
-Everyone works for the sake of working.
-Other planet colonization.
-A universal acceptance that there is no god.
-A world without television.
-A world without transportation.
-A STI/STD free world.
-A society with no bigots or hatred based on people's race/sexuality/gender e.t.c.
-A world with limited population growth.
-Universal Literacy.
-A more even system of wealth distribution.

The question you are asking implies that everyone has one. Not so.

Everyone is rich: then essentially everyone's poor too. If we all have the same, rich or poor doesn't really exist.
Everyone's a genius: same dilemma. how can a genius be distinguished if we all share the same infinite knowledge?
Everyone is superhuman: unless we all share the same abilities, some superhumans will claim dominance over the others.

I'm not saying your ideas are bad, they're quite provoking. Would we really be better off with any of these scenarios?

That aside, I'll shut up and give some suggestions:

One accepted world view/ religion by all.
Mars becomes liveable for humans, now we have two planets.
Everyone works for the sake of working, over money.

You're perceptive Shaman. The idea is Utopian worlds in theory, but with dystopian results.

No automobiles.

Clean water and nourishing food for all.
No homophobia or transphobia or misogyny or racism.
Some way of inhibiting runaway population growth.
Universal literacy.
Rational and fair distribution of wealth, not communism, but definitely more equal than it is now.

Awesome ideas Darcy! I find the idea of no automobiles especially interesting, or perhaps the opposite of the supreme technology idea. No technology. A truly green society.

I often fantasize about living in our area prior to European settlement....the sheer natural beauty of forest, mountains and sea, and the abundance of edible plants and fish and game. I've spent some time in the wilderness and I think I'd like to live in such a time and place.

But technology has its positives. Modern medicine is a marvel of human achievement. The internet allows me to view any piece of art, listen to any piece of music, discover any known fact, connect to people all around the world, without any effort at all.

I guess my utopia would be some combination of a primitive connectedness to a rich untouched natural environment with the inclusion of positive beneficial technology, excluding the chafe of such things as cell phones, automobiles, ect.

It would be amazing, wouldn't it. I depend on technology for so many things; the convenience, the easily ready entertainment, communication and an endless supply of information. At the same time, those are some of the same the reasons I don't like technology.

Medicine is why it would be dangerous. We take for granted how much safer we are because of technology. The wear and tear world of hunting-gathering would be exhilarating and I think you'd feel truly alive. At the same time, you'd be much more vulnerable. A broken leg would be so much more serious in that world that in ours.

I do think it would be more realistic if they had some sort of technology. Perhaps wind, or even a more advanced form of hypothetical energy like dark matter. That would also have it's duel-edge.

I think part of creating a utopian society is finding the balance between the two. Although, I feel utopian societies are like philosophical asymptotes , they can never be reached, but you can come close.
