I think the will to protect ourselves in any situation is natural. So in our daily life's we find ourselves putting the needs of our loved ones ahead of ourselves however room 101 is no daily occurrence. We're find the need to defend ourselves crucial as instinct sets in. Orwell shows us just how powerful fear is. As Winston turns on Julia the rebel in him dies and solely the need to survive is left.*
