I was shocked when I read pages 182-185 in the novel 1984. I did not suspect that Mr.Charrington was actually a member of the Thought Police. I also didn't foresee that there was a telecreen secretly hidden behind the picture on the wall, that previously was going to be cleaned by Julia. The essential qustion is how could he morally do such a thing? I believe that it was very harsh and currupt but it gave the book an exciting yet unforntunate twist in the story.
I was shocked as well. The government itself is very sneaky and cunning. The thought police are only the most loyal and intelligent party members. They disguise themselves in every aspect of the society (and as we have discovered, they are even tucked away in the proles. *gasp* :O!). It is impossible to know who is who. They know how rebels think. They know what to look for and are able to set up a variety of well thought out traps.
As for how could Mr.Charrington do such a thing? As you have learned, the party does not want its members showing any emotion (aside from anger). They do not show any compassion, and are not phased by anything. Do you remember when even Winston himself saw the severed hand on the street and did not think anything of it? The only thing that matters to the Thought Police is ensuring the loyalty of the party at any cost. They probably believe that those who are not loyal deserve the torture and punishments they receive as well.

The telescreen was quite a surprise! I wonder if the fact that it was hidden behind the picture of the past that Winston so cherished is coincidental?

It's amazing that Mr. Charrington tricked Winston. Mr. Charrington blended right in, and Winston trusted him easily. The fact that the Thought Police go to such extensive lengths, and take so much time to get someone like Winston is amazing. Winston probably thinks that the Thought Police get everyone because of how elaborate their plans are to get one person. I also never would have suspected that there was a telescreen behind the picture, but it should have been obvious because the government watches everyone.
