Some of my favorite directors. I'm a fan of a lot of French new wave films and Japanese movies.

The Seven Samurai is amazing, and I think due to that and its far-reaching influence earns itself the title of a classic. I mean, basically every "get together an elite team to face insurmountable odds" movie that came subsequently comes from The Seven Samurai.
"He had a word, too. Love, he called it. But I had been used to words for a long time. I knew that that word was like the others: just a shape to fill a lack; that when the right time came, you wouldn't need a word for that any more than for pride or fear."
-As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner
A lot of movies were based off of Akira Kurosawa films. Eastwoods A Fist Full of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More were based off his movie Yojimbo. The Magnificent Seven a popular movie in the 60's with Steve Mcqueen and others is the exact same movie as Seven Samurai. The Hidden Fortress is supposedly what inspired George Lucas to make Star Wars. Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remakes...Akira_Kurosawa and when I say the Magnificent Seven is the exact same movie I mean it. Yojimbo Rashomon Ran Throne of Blood are all great movies. One of my favorites was his last movie called Dreams. Check it out, it's not long. It is a story broken into 7 dreams. I find it necessary to mention the movie Harikiri by Masaki Kobayashi. Toshiro Mifune has to be one of the greatest actors of all time.

'The Social Network' is a classic film which, if not made so well, would've unfortunately ended up as a documentary... Lot of thanks to Aaron Sorkin & David Fincher!!
And a set of two films: {1. Flags of our Fathers & 2. Letters from Iwo Jima} is a masterpiece in sense of narration.
Two points of view for one situation. Ingenious experiment by Client Eastwood and Spielberg.
How about Film noirs.
Some of them because of their genre could be classified as classics
I came across this film a silent film drama classified as a lost film. Weird.

12 Angry Men is an unforgettable classic.
Silent films are a different game but for film noir I look to the French. Jean Luc Godard (Breathless and A Band of Outsiders are fantastic films), Francois Truffaut(Shoot The Piano Player), Jean Pierre Melville (La Samurai)
The surrealist Federico Fellini is also a very important film maker. Jim Jarmusch is my favorite working director. I think his best work was Dead Man starring Johnny Deep, William Hurt, Iggy Pop and Robert Mitchum. Though I thought all his movies were great.

There are many lists available online from Sight and Sound, Cahiers du cinema, and others. For documentaries, there are "Top 50 Documentaries" from various sources, etc. My favorite is Kevin Kelly's "true films" list:
