Cool that you mentioned Television. Tom Verlaine is a big influence to me on the guitar. And Patti Smith is awesome. I'm big into the 70's scene. You should check out Richard Hells album, Blank Generation.

Also the Beatles are terrible. Nirvana too. And Zeppelin too. Just how I feel. I'll never understand why people like those bands so much.

You people have such bland, horrible taste in music. Tom Waits? Are you having a laugh?

    Ys - Joanna Newsom
Have One on Me - Joanna Newsom
The Koln Concert - Keith Jarrett
69 Love Songs - The Magnetic Fields
    Blue - Joni Mitchell
Songs of Leonard Cohen - Leonard Cohen
    1184 - Windir

I don't know if these are going to stand up to objective scrutiny as The Best, but they're the ones I return to time after time and consistently re-listen to. This is not an exhaustive list, but just off the top of my head:

    IV - Led Zepplin

Appetite for Destruction- Guns n Roses

The Black Album, Load, Re-Load, Garage, Inc., Death Magnetic - Metallica

Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd and Second Helping - Lynyrd Skynyrd

    Pyromania - Def Leppard

    Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crue

I agree with you about Appetite For Destruction.

I can't agree with you about Led Zeppelin though. IV Led Zeppelin has Stairway to Heaven, but Houses of the Holy has No Quarter, D'yer M'aker and Over the Hills and Far Away. In addition, the album artwork is more interesting. Finally, Led Zeppelin - I has Dazed and Confused, and Led Zeppelin III has Tangerine and Immigrant Song. So, I will never be able to decide about Led Zeppelin.

For Metallica, I would have chosen either Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. The Black Album was the beginning of the end for me, though I can still deal with certain tracks from the Black Album, Load, Re-load and Garage Inc. But in my world, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are the best of Metallica and the ones I would reach for first.

No comment on Lynard Skynard. I will tolerate "That Smell" but only because it's a good thing to have as the text message notification sound or ringtone on your cell phone. This allows for indirect griping about cubicle farts at work. See, how it works is that when someone farts at work, you take out your phone and "sample" your "That Smell" ringtone after the funk has wafted over to your cubicle

I don't have much to say about Def Leppard. When I was 10 or 11, Pour Some Sugar on Me was one of the top music videos on Dial MTV. I've heard Hysteria, but not much from Pyromania. Pyromania is probably better than Hysteria but I wouldn't know. I can't imagine that Pyromania could be worse than what they released after Hysteria.

As far as Motley Crue goes, I can't say that Dr. Feelgood is better than Girls Girls Girls. I can't say that it's worse either. My interest in Motley Crue came about because I heard Nikki Sixx speak and I decided that I must listen to any music that he had a part in creating, and that interest was limited to Girls Girls Girls and Dr. Feelgood. And I still wasn't too wild about the song Girls Girls Girls and the accompanying video.

I guess what got my attention about your post was the Metallica choices. Just curious about those.

My choices for best albums are:

    Pink Floyd - The Wall

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

    Metallica - Ride the Lightning

    Metallica - Master of Puppets

    Pixies - Bassanova

Frank Black - Teenager of the Year

    Nirvana - Unplugged

There are more, but I can't list them right now.

These are all statements that you just don't hear often enough. I love Richard Hell, too.

    Also, Forever Changes is monumental.

My feelings about the Beatles and Zeppelin are shaky. I tend to fall into that category that goes straight to "The Stones are better" whenever the Fab Four pop up...But, I've slowly come to terms with the fact that I really do enjoy them, even as I find them terribly over-rated. Zeppelin is a bit over-rated, too...But, they're solid rock 'n roll, and that's enough for me a good portion of the time.

I have some 18,000 songs on my computer ranging from jazz to classical to rock, folk electronic. I am really into progressive rock. My deal is there tons more creative original bands. A lot of The Beatles lyrics are really stupid. Hendrix had some stupid lyrics too but at least he was good at guitar. I don't think they were great musicians either. I've been digging Johnny Cash lately and Richie Havens. Last FM is a great tool. I found many great bands through Last FM

I want to see David Byrne in concert he's playing in New York in late October. It will probably be my only chance to see one of my favorite artists before they all die.

    This band is sick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQPG2osrHzc

Proof the Beatles aren't any good.

I like this song a lot. She has a pretty voice. I like Leonard Cohen also. I came across some interesting artists recently because I was looking for some nice folk music with good lyrics. I like Richie Havens though he didn't make much original music.

    YES!

My friend lent me a CD by this band Mumford and Sons, Sigh No More. It is their first album. They have been nominated and won several awards. When you listen to the music you can understand why. Their lyrics have a poetic edge, although slightly cliched, at times. However, when the lyrics are juxaposed (sp???) the music, you will find an epic sound that is both hopeful and melancholic. I suppose this is why they are, in part, classified as a folk rock band.

    This is their cover song:

So many people with so much good taste. You would never find so many people in a any given pub. I have loved Pink Floyd ever since teenage angst, Spent so many hours together. The wall is the album I have spent so many hours of my life listening to but it belongs in my teenage years and all I can hear now is 'poor me'. 'Animals' is the surviving pink album. Pigman.

Tom Waites. Blue valentines. Neil Young...... genius. BB King midnight Believer. ELO. Bowie. Dire Straits, Knopfller.
