    Thank you, alien!

Mystyry and Max, I love your new works. I don't know how you guys manage to make things look so 3D. Brilliant!

Kyriakos, I am loving the larger images! The small ones are great too, but sometimes it's cool too see and focus on one large iconic structure. Nice work.

I just finished this commission for a partially dissected dragon fetus in a jar. I'm pleased with the look of it.

Here it is out of the jar:

    And inside:

I’m recalling the jitters I had when first seeing Alien or perhaps the lab scene from Independence Day with the aliens suspended in the transparent containers. My personal choice for the best of the lot I’ve seen thus far, in combination with the jar. The effect you created with the mason jar and air bubbles creates the appearance that the dragon is truly suspended in formaldehyde or some other preservative. I’m curious; are the bubbles in the glass or did you pour acrylic into the jar?
It would make a great prop for practical joke in a preserver’s cupboard. Looks like you’re having fun and getting paid for it.
Btw- Looks like you are knocking off a bottle of wine there.
    Keep up the creativity.

Thank you very much, Gilliatt! This is the first time I've attempted this sort of project. I really appreciate your feedback. The bubbly substance is a super clear paraffin (wax). I had to let it set in stages while holding the dragon in place. Not burning myself was tricky!

You're right about the wine. Merlot. I like to have a celebratory glass upon completion of a sculpture.

If I had more time, I would make a bunch of these to use in pranks. That's a fantastic idea. It's too bad X Files stopped running. I would beg a steady job from them.

That's brilliant Varenne - the bubbles, as noted, really add to the effect, as well as the green-red alien eyes.

You needn't worry about X Files, though: with work like this you could easily set yourself up as an SFX artist and let the Hollywood studios come to you (that's how most of them do it these days: create effect - will find a use)

    Happy Merlot!

Aw. Thank you, Mystyry! That's such a nice thing to say. Working on movies and tv shows is exactly what I want to be doing. It's tough to market myself because I'm somewhat shy, but hopefully someday I'll get the chance to show my work to people who can utilize it for projects like that. I think if I'm persistent it will pay off eventually. If not, I don't mind. I'm enjoying being an artist just for the sake of it. Thanks again for your sweet words and encouragement.

    Varenne,

    Incredible Alien- very lifelike!

I would love one to bring to the doctors office as a gag. Have it clutched in the busy waiting room, with alot of worried cell phone calls ("yes, he's still moving - looks unhappy. Sure, jar is fine...)

Why did I think of blue cheese when I first saw this?
But yes, blue moons is a great title. Fits the pic perfectly.

Mystyry, that's excellent! I like how dark it is.

    Thakyou Beau

    Thankyou Varenne

I was so happy with the way the texture mapped the foreground that I didn't notice that it went a lil sloppy on the distant mountain. I'll fix it up in photoshop later.

    Here's some 'moeba things:

A few months after the fact, but I thought I'd share the "making of Ben and Franklin's Thanksgiving 2011" as in doodles, developmental sketches and eventual layout on watercolor paper.

    Very interesting Gilliatt!

The other day I was reading a librarian's lament that in the digital age there are less first and second drafts in manuscript because now everyone rewrites on the fly.

There's a novel called Stephen Hero floating about which Joyce told Nora to burn so he could rewrite it as Portrait. Whether deciding not to was the right thing or wrong, it does give a sort of insight into his process for anyone interested.

It made me realise that this is also true of digital art which comes out in its final form, with corrections being made before the final render - there's limited history of the various reconsiderations and transformations, which usually vanish upon exiting the program unless someone is creating something specifically for a tutorial or advertising demonstration.

It's great that you kept the sketches - something I do just in case - but alas that there are too few bits and alternate preliminaries remaining (usually in a difficult to reach folder I've neglected to delete). Maybe I should start zipping them onto a usb stick.
