Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. It received alot of nominations, including academy nomination for Michelle Williams and I can see why. Brilliant film 10/10.

    I just watched Winter's Bone.

I didn't know what to expect, but it really was a fantastic movie. 9/10.

The Hunger Games, and I think I give it a 7.5. It was a good movie, entertaining, a lot of great social commentary, but not spectacular.

I agree. Great movie and realistic.. it's what love or relationships really look like in most cases. Though I'd give it a 9, instead of a 10.

I saw Sideways yesterday, ever since it came out people have been telling me how great it is so I finally sat down to watch it and yeah it had some good parts but in general not as good as I thought it would be. I did learn a thing or two about wine and I really want to try Pinot now.... I guess I'd give it a 7/10

I watched In the Land of Women, from 2007 (I think), yesterday. It was decent enough but none of the characters felt developed enough and they kind of left me cold. 6.5/10

People were rhapsodic about it when it released, but the sands of time have accorded it a more just place and now viewers new and old seem less emphatic in their praise. A.O. Scott saw this coming when he tacitly urged critics to pump their breaks a little back in 2005:

Today I watched the last 2/3 of Stardust, and it was an enjoyably irreverant take on fantasy films. I liked seeing De Niro in a role where he was perilously close to humiliation (as in so many of his roles in the last fifteen years), but ended up amusing in a most atypical fashion; still have to question Bobby's judgment in taking on the role in the first place though... Anyone sceptical about the film's merits should check out the bone-cracking fight between Michelle Pfeiffer and Mark Strong, provided your sensibilities aren't too fragile:

Friday night I was alone and was in the mood for some Austen so I watched both Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. They were both very enjoyable but I realized to my surprise that I haven't read NA so I decided to read it and found out I don't own it like I thought I did so I started MP instead and when I find NA I'll buy it.

Watched 'The Counterfeiters' on DVD last night.
A sombre, if sometimes ironically-funny, true story set in Sachsenhausen concentration camp during WWII. In German with English subtitles.
8/10 - the film is excellent. I've deducted a couple of notches due to the nuance/subtleties missed due to not understanding German.
Subtitles rarely give the full flavour.

Just finished re-watching the fantastic BBC 95 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice - marvellous!

There's going to be a viewing void tomorrow night. Mrs Neely suggests we fill it with North and South, another great adaptation. Yes it is period drama month in the Neely household (previous to those was Jane Eyre).

Revisited Blade Runner as the lad wanted to see it. I had forgotten most of it - I seem to remember that I was drunk - it was a long time ago - and so really enjoyed it. I think the film focused on the stronger parts of Dick's story. Good film - 8/10
