Sometimes they're so awful that they view as comedies - to the original producers' chagrin, no doubt. But they can be genuinely creepy too, if you give yourself over to them to be "creeped."
I watched some of them for a laugh when younger but there was one that was well directed and had a double twist ending. I watched it on you tube where there is a complete unbroken video of it. This gives some idea of how different in quality it is to the normal Hammer output.

"Je crois que beaucoup de gens sont dans cet état d’esprit: au fond, ils ne sentent pas concernés par l’Histoire. Mais pourtant, de temps à autre, l’Histoire pose sa main sur eux." Michel Houellebecq.

I just saw one of the most cheesy 80s movies...

    Les Miserables,
Volume 1, Fifth Book, Chapter 3
Remember this, my friends: there are no such things as bad plants or bad men. There are only bad cultivators.

Watched "The Incredible Petrified World", the first of 50 Sci Fi classics on a DVD box set Santa left me.
I'll give it 4/10 for John Carradine and for the old man that survived 14 years inside the volcano.
