new speak and your opinions
i find new speak as a way for B.B. to control the people. i think they are trying to reduce communication. now you must think why would they do this? well in my opinion its all about power, you see if the reduce the capibility to rebel against B.B.. this reminds me of texting today, not that im saying government is controling are communication but that are language is changing. what do you think?

Texting (or text talk really) is simply put, the beginning of newspeak. "lol, jk, whatever other damn acronyms there are." The dehumanization of the english language.

Agreed. Language is growing smaller every year as people find it too hard to type long words into a computer or find swearing an easier way to vent their frustration.
i agree completely. we should find someway we could make it so not just students but people are not as attached to texting or phones in general. i see it that there is going to be an increase on the gap between uneducated people and educated, as well as a decrease on the amount of intellectual people in are society

When I read the part where Syme is talking about the new newspeak dictionary to Winston, I was a little taken aback. Syme is destroying words from the language and doesn't care. His mind is so "pro B.B" that he doesn't realized what he's really doing. Destroying words so that the government can control the party easier? What about the proles? I don't see how a language could be reduced to such simple words when the proles would still be using the "old language". Unless eventually the party members will not understand the proles way of speaking and will ultimately ignore them?
Newspeak is a way of controlling the peoples' way of expressing themselves. The words are bland and expressionless. In our world now we experience a little bit of Newspeak, including texting and, every once in a while, e-mailing. Newspeak reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. In the 11th edition of Newspeak that is being written, newspeak is being used to make any alternative thinking (thoughtcrimes) impossible by removing any words that describe the ideas of freedom, rebellion and other things.
Newspeak is a cute concept, but it has very little to do with actual language.

I agree completely, and I also think that it's not just texting, but quite a few other forms of communication nowadays, like IM-ing and online chat. People rarely spell out everything with these forms of communication, and I know a few people who even use "text talk" in normal conversation. So maybe more people should take the time to stop and consider the effects that abbreviating words so often has on our vocabulary as a people. After all, we see in 1984 what the effect of a decreased vocabulary had on the people.

.. I think Newspeak is not just about making the people more dumb, but more about taking away emotion. If you think about all the things B.B. is doing, you see he is making them emotionless, which makes them easier to control.
Communication is a HUGE way of showing emotion. Taking away words takes away the people's ability to do that. I also believe that texting is doing to same... but not as drasticly. In 1984, people were forced to eliminate words from their language, but we choose to do it!!!

I agree with you about how that B.B is using newspeak to have more power over the people. He is using newspeak to take away the emotion out of the people. I believe that newspeak is just like texting today, in a sense that if we text someone are we really showing emotion to the other person. We can type something, but are we really feeling it?
