I like how the book starts out, the first three sentences-<br><br>"I am a sick man...I am a spiteful man. I am an unpleasant man. I think my liver is diseased."<br><br>it's a great opening.

Yes. I agree totally. Before I read those opening lines I was anticipating a dull, monotonous novel which churned out intellectual sentences but had no humour or feeling. The beginning changed my mind instantly.

Fantastic opening, one of the better ones I have read. Also gives the hint of dark humour that is to come from the character.

Yes, I was immediately pulled in by the opening sentences as well. I love the bleakness and hardship that is so evident throughout all of his books. It seems to be a dominant theme in all his works. There is definitely a sense of self-awareness in all his characters which brings about great sorrow and pain. He manages to do this without sounding like they're whinging which is difficult to do.
