Hello, aoballer, welcome to the forum.
I think I understand what you mean with "humanities moral character," and I would attribute it most with the small village's immense desire to conserve the strict moral and ethical code of religion and its values. How the townspeople, except, ironically at first, the reverend, reject Hester's presence, and her child born out of marriage, most highlights the values of the society - to abide by "the rules," so to speak, as taught in Puritan and Quaker literature (i.e. The Bible).
Easily, this quite answers your second question, regarding what the villagers most want. They crave moral order according to a strict religion's demands, and either hiding or corrupting any deviance (hence, by labeling Hester with the scarlet letter and terming Pearl a bastardized child).
I hope I have helped, and I wish you luck!
