The name of a children's book

Hi everyone,

I used to be obsessed with a children's book when I was a kid but I can't remember the name of it and neither can my mother. It was about a group of animals that were all good friends and hung out together in New York City. I wanna say that I remember them living in an abandoned subway station. I also have a vague memory of them visiting an abandoned opera house. Or maybe they just snuck in and watched an actual opera or something. I'm pretty sure one of them was a pigeon, can't remember the others. Sorry I can't be more detailed, I was about 8 when I was into it (that would be 1988.) Does this ring a bell for anyone?
