    WRITE ME OFF (Slobberbone)
Communication's staticky but somehow you still find
Through all of my jackassery a reason not to mind
And this is not some act, no calculation on my part
I pretty good with endings, but I don't know where to start

It's one thing to have tolerance, another to have faith
I've tried my best to give you my worst, how much will you take?
How much time before you find such a ludicrous cause lost?
And what do I gotta do to help you write me off?
    Write me off

With a need for recognition, I am just like anyone
It's your subsequent extension of attention that I shun
So don't await me to reciprocate, I won't pretend to try
I'm pretty good at faking, but I will not tell a lie

Be careful with your confidence, it might just be misplaced
For every good impression, how much bull**** gets replaced?
How much trust must I exhaust before your towel gets tossed?
Yeah, and what do I gotta do to help you write me off?
    Write me off

Sooner more than later everyone gets figured out
And I am no exception, it's the suspense I can do without
I'd live on pins and needles if I weren't so full of holes
Some things don't hold water, I'm a slow leak but the pressure grows

It's not to idealistic, it's not some praiseworthy conceit
But it's a bit more realistic if I pre-admit defeat
And all I might suggest is expectations have their cost
Yeah and what do I gotta do to help you write me off?
    Write me off.
There once was a scotsman named Drew
Who put too much wine in his stew
    He felt a bit drunk
    And fell off his bunk
And landed smack into his shoe

    "High Hopes" - Pink Floyd

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

There was a ragged band that followed our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    With friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    The taste was sweeter
    The nights of wonder
    With friends surrounded
    The dawn mist growing
    The water flowing
    The endless river

    Forever and ever
"The secret of contentment is the realization that life is a gift not a right".

    Paralyzed - Cardigans
This is where your sanity gives in
    and love begins
    Never lose your grip
    don't trip
    don't fall
    you'll lose it all
    The sweetest way to die
    It lies deep inside
    you can not hide
    it's the meanest fire
    Oh, it's strange desire
    you can not lie
    that's a needless fight
    When your blood runs dry
    you're paralyzed
    it will eat your mind
    Did you hold it back?
It comes to you in slow attacks
    It's the meanest fire

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains

I’m only happy when it rains
I’m only happy when it’s complicated
And though I know you can’t appreciate it
I’m only happy when it rains
You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad
I’m only happy when it rains

    Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
    Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

I’m only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn’t accidentally tell you that
I’m only happy when it rains
You’ll get the message by the time I’m through
When I complain about me and you
I’m only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down...pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me...pour your misery down
    Pour your misery down...pour
    You can keep me company
As long as you don’t care

I’m only happy when it rains
You want to hear about my new obsession
I’m riding high upon a deep depression
I’m only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains....pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains...pour some misery down on me...pour some misery down on me...pour some misery down on me...pour some misery down on me

I've been having this song in mind for a week and it's not surprising... But only now I read it all for the first time and if read in the light of recent events it's quite spooky...

Pet Shop Boys - King's Cross

The man at the back of the queue was sent
To feel the smack of firm government
Linger by the flyposter, for a fight
It's the same story every night
I've been hurt and we've been had
You leave home, and you don't go back

Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee

Only last night I found myself lost
By the station called King's Cross
Dead and wounded on either side
You know it's only a matter of time
I've been good and I've been bad
I've been guilty of hanging around

Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee

So I went looking out today
For the one who got away
    Murder walking round the block
    Ending up in King's Cross
Good luck, bad luck waiting in a line
It takes more than the matter of time

Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee

Someone told me Monday, someone told me Saturday
Wait until tomorrow and there's still no way
Read it in a book or write it in a letter
Wake up in the morning and there's still no guarantee
    And there's still no guarantee
    There is still no guarantee
dead on the inside, i've got nothing to prove
keep me alive and give me something to lose

I love "Suzanne" sang by leonard cohen, also its lyric poetry.

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

    And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
    From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
    But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
    Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

    Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
    From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
    While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

I was thinking myself about posting something on Leonard Cohen. His poetry is so deep and totally captivates me.

I've decided to share with you some lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel. Every time I hear this song, it just makes me want to sit in the garden with a glass of wine and read some Robert Frost.

It’s a still life water color,
    Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
    And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
    Couched in our indifference
    Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
    In the dangling conversation
    And the superficial sighs
Are the borders of our lives

And you read your emily dickinson,
    And I my robert frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
    That measure what we’ve lost.
    Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm
    Couplets out of rhyme
    In syncopated time
    Lost in the dangling conversation
    And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our lives.
Yes, we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
    Can analysis be worthwhile?
    Is the theater really dead?
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
    I cannot feel your hand,
You’re a stranger now unto me
    Lost in the dangling conversation.
    And the superficial sighs,
In the borders of our lives.
    - Dangling Conversation, Simon and Garfunkel

If with that tongue he cannot win a woman."

I find lyrics to be endlessly fascinating, from the obviously crude to the sublime to the...strange.

This is one of my favorites, from THE DOORS(1967), flip side of the "Light My Fire" single, "The Crystal Ship." Works fine on its own, and of course wonderfully with the understated music:

    "Before you slip into unconsciousness
I'd like to have another kiss
    Another flashing chance at bliss
    Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We'll meet again, we'll meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
    Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I'll drop a line."

    meaningless

    Meaningless?
You mean it's all been meaningless?
    Every whisper and caress?
Yes yes yes it was totally meaningless
    Meaningless
    like when two fireflies flouresce
    Just like everything I guess
    it was utterly meaningless
    Even less
    a little glimpse of nothingness
    sucking meaning from the
    rest of this mess
Yes yes yes it was thoroughly meaningless
and if some dim bulb should say
we were in love in some way
kick all his teeth in for me
and if you feel like keeping on kicking
    feel free
    Meaningless
Who dare say it wasn't meaningless?
    Shout from the rooftops
    and address the press
Ha ha ha it was totally meaningless
    Meaningless
Meaning less than a game of chess
    Just like your mother said
    and mother knows best
I knew it all the time but now I confess
Yes yes yes how deliciously meaningless
Yes yes yes how effervescently meaningless
Yes yes yes how beautifully meaningless
Yes yes yes how profoundly meaningless
Yes yes yes how definatively meaningless
Yes yes yes how comprehensively meaningless
Yes yes yes how magnificently meaningless
Yes yes yes how incredibly meaningless
Yes yes yes how unprecedentedly meaningless
Yes yes yes how mind-blowingly meaningless
Yes yes yes how unbelievably meaningless
Yes yes yes how infinitely meaningless

    tribute - tenacious d

This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
    And he said:
    [sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)
    [spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
    and we each said... "Okay."
    [sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
    Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

He asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
    Rock!
    Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
    Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
    This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best mutha****in' song the greatest song in the world.
    [2-part skat]
    [spoken]
And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
    anything like this song.
    [sung]
This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, ****! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
    [skat]
    All right! All right!
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

I thought that exact same thing about songs being poems this morning when I read the English lyrics to my three favourite Il Divo songs. They aren't exactly rock, more of pop/opera but the lyrics are amazing.

    Nella Fantasia-In Fantasy

In the fantasy I see a just world
Everyone lives in peace and honesty
The dream of souls that are always free
    Like the clouds that fly
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul
In the fantasy I see a clear world
The night is also less dark there
The dream of souls that are always free
Like the clouds that fly full of humanity
In the fantasy there is a a warm wind that exists
Which blows on the city like a friend
The dream of souls that are always free
    Like the clouds that fly
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul

    Passera-It Will Pass

    Songs don't write themselves
    But they are born
    From the things that happen
    Every day around us
There are enough songs for you to pick (one)
There is also one for you
(you) Who makes life too much hard work
And (you) who never even smiles
Songs are gipsies and steal poetry
They deceive you like pills of happiness
Songs don't cure love and illnesses
But they give us that small pain that exists
It will pass, it will pass
If a boy and a guitar are like them
    Like you, in cities
To look at this life which doesn't go
    Which kills us with illusions
And with the age of the songs
    It will pass over us
We will all end up in a bank sooner or later
    Why not, and who knows
And the anguish of a rich poverty
To speak of the love affairs that you never had
To sing a song that you don't know how it goes
Because you have them lost within
And your memories alone will pass
    In a world of automobiles
    And of great speed
For the one who always arrives last
And for the one who says goodbye
For the one who beats the obstacles
In this diversity songs are fireflies
    That sing in the darkness
It will pass sooner or later
This small pain that is in you
That is in me, that is in us
And it makes us feel like sailors
At the mercy of the wind and of the nostalgia
To sing a song that you don't know how it goes
But that small pain that is hatred or that is love will pass
It will pass, it will pass
Even if you will only sing la la la
It will pass, it will pass and a song will serve as something
    If your small pain
That is hatred or that is love will pass

    Ti Amero-I Will Love You

The night slips upon the world
    That falls asleep
And the moon will dress in silver
    The sea and the city
And you will be missing me
    Much more
    How much you don't know
    I continue to believe that
We are one soul you and I
I will love you nevertheless, I know
Even if you are not with me
    I will love you
I will carry you with me in the sun
In the dreams that I will make
I will steal the colours of the morning
    And a clear sky
Upon which I will paint your face
    And I will smile
    I continue to believe that
We are one soul you and I
I will love you nevertheless, I know
Even if you are not with me
I will carry you with me
You are missing me more than ever tonight
    How much you don't know
    I continue to believe that
We are one soul you and I
I will love you nevertheless, I know
Even if you are not with me
    I will love you

the dresden dolls - coin operated boy

    coin operated boy
sitting on the shelf he is just a toy
but i turn him on and he comes to life
    automatic joy
that is why i want a coin operated boy

    made of plastic and elastic
    he is rugged and long-lasting
who could ever ever ask for more
    love without complications galore
many shapes and weights to choose from
i will never leave my bedroom
i will never cry at night again
wrap my arms around him and pretend....

    coin operated boy
all the other real ones that i destroy
cannot hold a candle to my new boy and i'll
never let him go and i'll never be alone
not with my coin operated boy......

this bridge was written to make you feel smittener
with my sad picture of girl getting bitterer
can you extract me from my plastic fantasy
i didnt think so but im still convinceable
will you persist even after i bet you
a billion dollars that i'll never love you
will you persist even after i kiss you
    goodbye for the last time
will you keep on trying to prove it?
    i'm dying to lose it...
    i want it
    i want you
i want a coin operated boy.

and if i had a star to wish on
for my life i cant imagine
any flesh and blood could be his match
i can even take him in the bath

    coin operated boy
he may not be real experienced with girls
but i know he feels like a boy should feel
isnt that the point that is why i want a
    coin operated boy
with his pretty coin operated voice
saying that he loves me that hes thinking of me
    straight and to the point
    that is why i want
    a coin operated boy.
dead on the inside, i've got nothing to prove
keep me alive and give me something to lose

If this has already been posted; sorry.....

    "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"

    All our times have come
    Here but now they're gone
    Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
    Baby I'm your man...

    Valentine is done
    Here but now they're gone
    Romeo and Juliet
    Are together in eternity...
    Romeo and Juliet

40,000 men and women everyday... Like Romeo and
    Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday... Redefine
    happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like
    they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
    Baby I'm your man...

    Love of two is one
    Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear we couldn't go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared
    Saying don't be afraid

Come on baby... And we had no fear
And we ran to him... Then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodbye
We had become like they are
    We had taken his hand
We had become like they are

Come on baby...don't fear the reaper

    Blue Oyster Cult

This song has many different versions, but this is the one I like best; sung by the late Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention, who died at age 31, 1978 of a massive brain hemorrhage.

    Mattie Groves

A holiday, a holiday, and the first one of the year.
Lord Darnell's wife came into church, the gospel for to hear.

And when the meeting it was done, she cast her eyes about,
And there she saw little Matty Groves, walking in the crowd.

“Come home with me, little Matty Groves, come home with me tonight.
Come home with me, little Matty Groves, and sleep with me till light.”

“Oh, I can't come home, I won't come home and sleep with you tonight,
By the rings on your fingers I can tell you are Lord Darnell's wife.”

“What if I am Lord Darnell's wife? Lord Darnell's not at home.
For he is out in the far cornfields, bringing the yearlings home.”

And a servant who was standing by and hearing what was said,
He swore Lord Darnell he would know before the sun would set.

And in his hurry to carry the news, he bent his breast and ran,
And when he came to the broad mill stream, he took off his shoes and swam.

Little Matty Groves, he lay down and took a little sleep.
When he awoke, Lord Darnell he was standing at his feet.

Saying “How do you like my feather bed? And how do you like my sheets?
How do you like my lady who lies in your arms asleep?”

“Oh, well I like your feather bed, and well I like your sheets.
But better I like your lady gay who lies in my arms asleep.”

“Well, get up, get up,” Lord Darnell cried, “get up as quick as you can!
It'll never be said in fair England that I slew a naked man.”

“Oh, I can't get up, I won't get up, I can't get up for my life.
For you have two long beaten swords and I not a pocket-knife.”

“Well it's true I have two beaten swords, and they cost me deep in the purse.
But you will have the better of them and I will have the worse.”

“And you will strike the very first blow, and strike it like a man.
I will strike the very next blow, and I'll kill you if I can.”

So Matty struck the very first blow, and he hurt Lord Darnell sore.
Lord Darnell struck the very next blow, and Matty struck no more.

And then Lord Darnell he took his wife and he sat her on his knee,
Saying, “Who do you like the best of us, Matty Groves or me?”

And then up spoke his own dear wife, never heard to speak so free.
“I'd rather a kiss from dead Matty's lips than you and your finery.”

Lord Darnell he jumped up and loudly he did bawl,
He struck his wife right through the heart and pinned her against the wall.

“A grave, a grave!” Lord Darnell cried, “to put these lovers in.
But bury my lady at the top for she was of noble kin.”

    Yeah, c'mon

    When the music's over
    When the music's over, yeah
    When the music's over
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights, yeah

    When the music's over
    When the music's over
    When the music's over
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights

For the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
    Music is your only friend
    Until the end
    Until the end
    Until the end

    I got some friends inside

The face in the mirror won't stop
The girl in the window won't drop
    A feast of friends
    "Alive!" she cried
    Waitin' for me
    Outside!

    Before I sink
    Into the big sleep
    I want to hear
    I want to hear
    The scream of the butterfly

    Come back, baby
    Back into my arm
We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground

I hear a very gentle sound
    Very near yet very far
    Very soft, yeah, very clear
    Come today, come today

What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down

I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it...
We want the world and we want it...
    Now
    Now?
    Now!

    Persian night, babe
    See the light, babe
    Save us!
    Jesus!
    Save us!

    So when the music's over
    When the music's over, yeah
    When the music's over
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights
    Turn out the lights

Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
    Music is your only friend
    Until the end
    Until the end
    Until the end!
For the triumph of evil, all it takes is for a few good men to do nothing.

    Pink Floyd - Echoes

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
    In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
    Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

    Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Now this is the day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.

Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.

The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.

The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashing
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane West Wind

When supper time came the old cook came on deck
Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya
At 7PM a main hatchway caved in
He said fellas it's been good to know ya.

The Captain wired in he had water coming in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the words turn the minutes to hours
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd fifteen more miles behind her.

They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

    Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the ruins of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.

    And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
    In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they say, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
