Swearing

When I found this forum, I was happy. "Finally!" I thought, "A place on the Internet where intelligent people gather to discuss literature!" And then I see a "NO SWEARING" rule. Censorship on a literature site is kind of counter-productive. Plus, so many of my favorite stories contain swear words, most notably the works of the supremely eloquent David Foster Wallace. I had hoped to find someone to discuss such said works with on this site, but I guess that's not going to happen. I am a sad Anon.

Um, BYE.

Oh, dear. So brief a stay - we can never know what sparkling gems of wit and insight we might have been party to. It's a tragically lost opportunity for all LitNetters.

The swearing rule is so this forum can be accessible to all ages. The forum owners don't want kids to be shut out, especially at schools.

That being said, you can swear here. It's just censored. And if you're too ****ing dense to figure out what swear word is being used in place of the asterisks, your **** out of luck, as your dumbass probably shouldn't be here anyways.

There should be a minimum number of posts required to start threads.

So should we all discuss literature like: "Dante's **** is ****ed up! There's like guys with backwards heads rolling around in ****!"

or

"Wtf is up with Hedda Gabler? That's one crazy-*** *****!"

Had Anonymous C thought about his statment he would understand that the Intelligence he speaks of makes this forum special in the fact that there is not a need to swear. we use our INTELLIGENCE to fill in the blank. Take Mutatis for example, I know exactly what words he implied. It is the ability to use context clues, and implied meaning two skills that are taught in 5th grade literature. Anyone can say something blatently, but it takes true intellect to be able to phrase something so that the appropriate audience understands but the youth audiance retains access to our beloved sight.

So if you are such an ignorant fool that you can not comprehend this simple curtousy than you do NOT deserve to be a part of our community. This community of INTELLIGENT and diverse people, is based on a mutural respect and common courtesy to all ages, which is what this site was based on, and that our community is better off without the likes of such a person. So I leave this poster with the reply of good riddance!

I think I agree with that. Really, you must be of really really low intelligence not to comprehend asterisks. Anyway, one should be able to talk normally.

Although I do find the whole discussion about swearing a bit... bourgeois (yes, the higher classes swear too, like the lower classes, only the middle classes are really against it), I find it f*cking annoying that people can't f*cking talk without f*cking swearing all the f*cking time. (:D) See how annoying it is? At least you filter that out with the 'no swearing' rule.

Swearing has a prupose: vent frustration. If you are not frustrated then do not swear. It is hardly conceivable that someone would be frustrated while dicussing lit (although some really frustrating discussions can create themselves).

There was an extensive article concerning Fess up to the Music, with pictures of the cast in rehearsal and an interview with The Mashed Potatoes, in which Ricky Sampson proclaimed that it was the best thing they’d ever done and advance bookings were “******* fantastic.”
Lord Redstone didn’t like Ricky using such words when talking to the press, as it tended to undermine what he had in mind as his next move into publicity for the show. Of course, it would go down well with the kids, who thought that swearing was a sign of maturity, but there were other forces at play in selling them rubbish than their juvenile fantasies.

Are you for real? :sosp: Not allowing swearing in posts does not constitute censorship. It is first of all a simple matter of courtesy, and secondly due to a desire not to get the site regarded as "not suitable for young people".

Just to let some know, you don't have to censor your self. If you type a curse word as it is, the site censors the curse word: ****ing, mother****er, ***-hole. You don't have to actually type the asterisk, as I did not do so there. Also, you shouldn't try getting around the censors, as this is against the rules (as in only replacing the "u" in ****). Just letting you know before Scheherazade nails you :).

oh, I didn't know it wasn't allowed to only do the "u" or the "i" (in that well-known word :D)!

I think I saw it on here once and then decided to do it too. But, then I can hardly be very offensive as I don't do it very often anyway.
