This is great Kathy. It will be handy for all the non-geniuses like me. ;) :p
Kathy, that was fantastic of you to take the time to teach those who are struggling with posting and manouvering (spell?!) in a forum. Thanks for those useful pointers, I am sure that your time will be well worth it.
See? There really ARE geniuses (is that the plural??!! ... no matter) here.
And another important piece of information (that Kathy forgot) for all the newly arrived: *drum roll*
This forum's good angel is called kathycf :).
look at you all being so proactive :)
Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the kudos, folks. :)
Virgil, Logos pointed that tip out as well, and I only found out about it myself a few nights ago...after looking at those arrows for months...

If you want to post personal writing, you will need to go to either of these places.
For general writing, (articles, things of that nature) go here.
To share short stories, go here.
To share personal poetry, go here.
Please be sure to read guidelines for posting. These are called "sticky" threads (like a sticky note) and will be found at the top of the page in each respective forum. :)
Busy posting in the games forum. :p
Kathy this is very kind and thoughtful of you. I hope it helps others.
Here is another thing I think should be added, although we all love to hear from you and like to help PMing people begging them to do your homework for you ( unless theyve actually said pm me Ill help you, is well if its me anyway is much less likley to get you help. Also once weve helped you we all appreciate a little gratitude.
other than that welcome newbies come in have fun, be happy :D:D:D
Yupp so dont go looking for smilies on google image a) you tend to get rubbis smilies that dissapaera b) your not always sure you arent hotlinking.
Id also like to say I keep a list in my blog of smilie host sites if you find a good source just send me a PM or put a comment in my blog . I love smilies:D:D
Thankee, I'm new and i was kinda lost.
Of course LitNet has its own site specific FAQ's that can be found here:
Frequently Asked Questions
.
Oh, yes of course Logos. I only posted the ones I did because they seem to cover a few topics that are not covered by the FAQ that is present here on site. I will edit my post to reflect that.
No offense intended to our own forum. :)
** Bump**
I wonder should I tell people about the resrtictions on animated smilies and how to turn them off??
:D http://www.websmileys.com/sm/sad/533.gifhttp://www.websmileys.com/sm/happy/050.gif
I am not a newbie, but I'm :crash: :crash:
So, is it possible to put animation for avatar or signature? Please....
You won't be able to use an animation for a signature picture, I know that because I tried a couple of weeks ago.
It is my understanding that animated avatars are allowed. At least they were, because I saw people with them. You can find a whole list of sites that offer them here. Keep in mind that sometimes animated avatars can be distracting to other users so you might want to keep the animation low key.
Once you have found one that is the right size, you upload it just as you did your current avatar.
OK i had to check but you can use animated avys but Kath is right they dont work in the sigs
We love you kathy! :D Thanks so much for this useful guide! I thought I was pretty decent at navigating and using the forum but a learned a fair bit when reading through.
How long have I been a member and I nevre saw the popup thinggy
Thanks again kathy:D *runs off to play with her options* :p
Could one of the moderators explain how the ignore function works? My basic understanding of it is that you will no longer see posts from a particular person.
But what about threads that they start, or what if a person on your ignore list sends you a PM? Do you see the threads, and receive the PM?
I don't use the ignore list, and I was wondering about it, and thought maybe someone else might wonder about it too.
If you copy a picture from a site and then put it in your photo bucket account where it gets imaging tags is that still classed as hotlinking? Just wondering....
And how does they buddy/ignore lists work?
No.
Say I run a website called Kathy's Clipart. I have clipart on my website, and I pay a company to host my site. Instead of taking the clipart and hosting it yourself, you decide to just link to my images that are hosted by me. Part of paying for a website is paying for the bandwidth that the website uses.
So, say you have a hotlinked an image from Kathy's Clipart here at litnet. Every time the page is loaded with that picture on it, it takes bandwidth from my site because that is where the images are hosted. Therefore, that costs ME money, so it is analogous to stealing.Quote:
Bandwidth refers to how much data you can send through a network or modem connection. It is usually measured in bits per second, or "bps." You can think of bandwidth as a highway with cars travelling on it. The highway is the network connection and the cars are the data. The wider the highway, the more cars can travel on it at one time. Therefore more cars can get to their destinations faster. The same principle applies to computer data -- the more bandwidth, the more information that can be transferred within a given amount of time.
When you take a picture from Kathy's Clipart and host it yourself at photobucket, now you are using photobucket's bandwidth to display the image. That is ok, because that is what photobucket is there for. They want you to do that, because when you use their service, they show you advertisements. They also advertise their premium services which people pay for.
Hotlinking is when you don't download the image to your computer and you don't have it hosted somewhere (like photobucket) yourself.
Now, the other issue is taking a copyrighted image. Well, sometimes people will use code to disable right clicking on an image, and that protects it to a degree. They can also do a few other things to protect their image. I guess alot depends on the integrity and knowledge of the person gathering images. For example, I might be able to get somebody else's artwork into my photobucket account, but that doesn't give me the right to sell it, or claim it as my own work.
How to delete post?
You can't. If you ask a mod nicely they may do it for you, or, just Edit it like you did with message "Please delete" or somesuch :)
Thank you :D
What is criteria for putting someone on member list? Looks to me that it's not number of posts?
So why then The Atheist is not on the list?
Please could someone tell me if it is possible to increase the text size not when I am posting but in general when I am just browsing it would really help because this site makes me head achy after awhile :)
Thank you Logos you don't know how helpful that is I appreciate it :)
how can i set a picture in my post easily?
How to make a poll, and how to disable possibility of posting personal opinions about that question?
Thank you Logos; I'll have to print this out. Talk about nuts and bolts. Nice work. Have you been checked for carpal-tunnel. Have a great day. quasi
i have a problem in editing message.when i post a message twis how can i delete one? in the edit option there is not any option for deleting. how can i?
Sorry, there is no option to completely delete a post for members. If you edit it to say 'please delete' or 'posted in error' or something like that one of the mods can delete it for you :)
why don't i have a 'new thread' button option on my litnet web page? can't i have it before 100 posts? Then how can i post a new thread?

Just thought I'd bump this topic as its a very helpful thread.
Another Bump!
:D
I may have simply overlooked it but i could not find a page for Wiliam Faulkner in the section entitled "Discussion on Specific Authors & Books." I mean no offense to fans of what should be Mr. Faulkner's neighbors in this section, Jeffrey Farnol and Martha Finley, but surely Mr. Faulkner, a nobel laureate and one of the most influential modern writers in the english language, deserves as much space as these and other lesser writers have been afforded. I therefore would like to ask whichever moderator is able to create such a section in the "Discussion on Specific Authors & Books" section for William Faulkner if it is at all possible.
I hope i have posted this message in the appropriate section of the forum. Thank you. :)
