February '10 Reading Poll

In 2010, we are going back to "random" book nominations for our readings.

Please nominate the novel you would like to read in February in this thread by December 31st.

Please remember that:

- Only those members with 50+ posts can nominate.

- One nomination per member.

- Only the first 10 nominations will be included in the poll.


The Book Club readings are for those who would like to read and discuss books together with other members.

If you are not able to take part or unwilling to (re)read your own nominations, please refrain from taking part in the process.

An excellent choice, Dark Muse, I have to admit I'd enjoy reading that one again as much as my own nomination.

Hi, I just introduced myself to this forum. I forgot to say, Villette is one of my all-time favorite books.

So glad to see you mention it here, I wonder what else you like.

It is early on yet but wondering if another book can catch up with Vilette.

I have to say I am pulling for Vilette to keep the lead, I am quite looking forward to reading that book and have been wanting to for a while. Though there are a few other choices I woulnd't mind reading.

I respect the Brontes [I've even visited the museum: amazed at how small Emily was going by a preserved dress in a class case] and I will read it but I do hope the contest isn't over yet. There are at least two books I'd prefer to read on the list.

Don't members realise just how good The Invisible Man is? It's one of the classics of black American Literature written at a time when you had to be something special as a black author to get published in the USA.

Anyway I'm holding back my vote this month after seeing the way the Androids book snaked infront another stupendous US author called Bellow at the finishing post. I could have made a difference to that if I hadn't thrown my hat into the ring so early.

I think you can see my hat on the avatar, still cooly perched upon my head.

A Thousan Splendid Suns. Have already read the first chapter and I am definitely intrigued.

It is a great read, Mary, for me it did what only really good novels do in that it took me into another world and broadened my mind.

I don't think it's got a cat in hell's chance of winning tho.

Hehe I would be quite happy to read The Invisible Man since it was my nomination, but I gave my vote to Villette since it has been on my bookshelf longer.

That's terrible news for those of us hoping this won't be a one horse race lol. I think I had a copy on my shelf years ago, never got round to reading it. I hope it's still buried in there somewhere.

Inspite of my slight bias for cheering Villetta on, I would not worry yet if I were you. I have seen some pretty unexpected things happen within the last few days of the voting period.

A lot of people I think hang back and wait to vote toward the end.

"The Visit" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Great play... but I preferred The Physicists myself. Of all the books posted here Tristam Shandy is by far the best in my opinion... one that I read several times and still would not balk at reading again.

and Pickwick Papers is a great 19th century book. I have read them both, but I think they are too long to be read in the first few days of a month so that the readers can have a meaningful dialog. If either one is picked, there is not going to be a dialog, at least a meaningful one. With this one book a month deal, the books sholdn't be over three huhndred pages. I can rfead as fast as the next person, but I have other things to do. I hope that you readers realize this and pick some shorter books. The whole purpose, as I understand it, is to get a dialog going and get other views and opinions about a book. If the book is overly long, this wont happen.

I have to admit, being that I am currently reading Our Mutual Frined, while I enjoy Dickens writing, I am not sure how eager I would be to directly jump right into another long Dickens book. I may have to consider passing if that wins just to give myself a breather.

I wonder if there's time for something to catch up to Villette...

Though I am rooting for Villette, I remember last month, I thought for sure Humboltd's Gift was going to take it, but than like within the last day of voting it was suddenly overtaken.

It's always possible - only 5/6 votes needed for something else to take the lead...

I'm surprised at the lack of last minute voting ;)
