August / Japan Reading Poll
-
I have a beautiful unabridged version of The Tale of Genji that's been waiting patiently on my bookshelf for two years. I don't think it's readable in one month, however.
-
Great idea as i did not read anything from Japanese literature, I wait for others suggestions as I do not know about this.
-
Oh, I have Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami just waiting to be read. :D That's what I nominate.
-
I'd like to nominate the novel Goodbye Tsugumi by Banana Yoshimoto. :)

You beat it me to it :D I thought that since it didn't work out in the summer read I'd try my luck here lol
-
I nominate Yasunari Kawabata's Palm-of-the-Hand Stories.

I want to open my copy too, but it is such a great commitment. One day ...

After reading the blurb on Amazon, I'll second this nomination. The descrpition of the first part of the book reminds me a bit of Musui's Story, by Katsu Kokichi, which could be another option.
Edit:
In my excitement to have found this site I jumped right in before reading the procedures. Many apologizes from the exuberant newbie.

I'd like to nominateSilence by Shusaku Endo. SItting next to me here, staring at me from my -To Be Read- pile.

Has anyone read Mishima? I have been told by multiple people that his work is excellent, however I have no clue where to start.
edit: after doing a little googling it seems that his tetralogy The Sea of Fertility is his highest regarded work, and therefore the most easily obtainable in translation. So, I guess I nominate the first one, Spring Snow - Yukio Mishima
-
I've already read Kafka on the Shore, not my favourite of Murakami's books though it is very good.
JBI: I've read The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Mishima and it was very good. If you like the style of Japanese fiction then I'd have thought you'd like Mishima.
I'd like to nominate The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe which is sitting on my shelf waiting to be read :D
-
I'd like to nominate 'The Wind-up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami. (Am I allowed to nominate a novel by an author that has already been nominated with another work? I'm sorry to ask but this is my first nomination.)

This is a hint for KItkat:D if there is, I will.
To be honest, I have to see I can find the text or not. If I have the first one, I will vote for it.
-
Last 3 nominations are up for grabs!

What a topical picture, Virgil! Even the writing on the Kitkats is in Japanese! :D

One thing, Don't worry about me, I never get fat :D I can handle all of them without sharing anyone  .Anyone wants one? :D
-
In that case can I please nominate Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami.
Of course, I'm new here and I don't even know if I'm allowed to nominate...
-
You will likely never read a novel that matches Tozon Shimazaki's The Broken Commandment. It is the greatest novel I ever read. I'll gladly read it again if there is a consensus for it.
Kit Kat? Did you mean Soseki Natsume's I Am A Cat?
-
This is a good list. I think I will join in even if one of the three books I have read already win the vote (I enjoyed them all immensely).
Can I nominate? Well if so I'd like to nominate "Kangaroo Notebook" by Kobo Abe.
-
-

You need to have at least 100 posts to be able to nominate/vote, Bethany.

Decided to go with Never Let Me Go... Seems like an interesting book.

Thanks for bringing that up, Bouquin.
He will be disqualified, unfortunately. I will replace it with Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.
-
Norwegian Wood is on the poll but not in any of lists you've made nor is there a link available to see the summary description...
I'm going with Yukio Mishima's Spring Snow, though, just because I already own it and has been waiting 2 years to be read. Haha...

Thanks for reminding. I must have forgotten to add it in my hurry earlier (was on my lunch break).
PS: Glad you are back and posting, Brigitte! :)

I'm guessing the competition will be between Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore, which are the only two books on the list that I've already read. Ironic. Go Goodbye Tsugumi! :thumbs_up

I haven't read any of the books listed so probably will give a try to whatever has been chosen (as long as it is available at the library).
For some reason, Kafka on the Shore sounds very boring to me... but what do I know? :D
-
Thank you! It's good to be back. (: Couldn't stay away and it is summer after all!
I've never read any of the books on the list either so I'm excited for anything. Though people have told me Murakami is a fantastic author. Kafka On The Shore seems more interesting than Norwegian Wood, but that's just me.
