Need Help Persuasive Techniques For English Essay Due Tomorrow

My english teacher assigned us an assignment for our class. It was to write a persuasive essay on what ever topic. We had to write it in a persuasive way to convince the audience to agree with the writer. I did Underage Drinking. We had to put 6 persuasive techniques in the essay.

So I need help, I need all these things for Underage Drinking in the essay:
Figure of Speech
Allusion
Analogy
Parallelism

I have two rite now
Rhetorical Question-Should you drink and drive?
Anecdote- About the event in Michigan about underage drinkers going into Michigan

Hello, eatmorchikin. I know not what to recommend for your essay, but for a persuasive paper, and on such a topic as underage drinking, I suggest persuading your audience through an emotional response; this type of approach usually acts as the most convincing. From the beginning, statistics and even personal stories and consequences of underage drinking (or merely drinking in general) may help; your need for the literary use of 'analogy' may work with a personal story. The use of 'allusion' requires a footnote-like reference to some source, reassuring your audience of a background knowledge on the subject, and filling them in on that specific knowledge. Parallelism speaks for itself - present both points of view and why you feel your opinion proves superior and just. Good luck!

...it's just poss. that if you contemplate on the textbook definition of these words, and then substitute your topic to define them, you will have your answer.

Sorry, these techniques are all rather pedestrian. Might I suggest an occulative paralipsis, or perhaps even an aposiopesis to heighten the dramatic tension within the essay? If you insist on using parallelism, you should at least use an anaphora for its lyrical effect.

Yeah, hopefully his friends are only interested in sport (or drinking), he has an overworked teacher and his parents aren't interested. At least he'll probably always really hate literature now.

As long as we're imagining things, surely we can come up with a more gruesome scenario for our intrepid little hero. Here's one:

PART 1:
Little Pepe is an only child. He loves his parents very much; tragically, they perish in a freak blimp accident. He is sent to an orphanage, where the cruel parson who runs the place cruelly forces Little Pepe to go beg for alms with the lepers; consequently, he contracts leprosy, and both his arms fall off. His only solace is the Internet; tragically, the internet connection is dial-up. His screen name "eatmorchikin" reflects the one longing Little Pepe has in life; tragically, he has never been allowed to taste chicken. He gleaned his desire for chicken from his favorite book, which is nothing more than a book of coupons for a Kentucky Fried Chicken; tragically, the coupons have all expired.

PART 2:
The cruel parson cruelly levies a most unfair assignment on poor Little Pepe: he is to write a persuasive essay using six persuasive techniques. The cruel parson taunts him further by allowing Pepe to pick the subject. The parson gives him this assignment at 10:30 on a Sunday evening--it is to be turned in at 7:30 the following morning. Bravely, Pepe begins the essay, but he knows he is outmatched. Frantically, he decides to appeal to his fellow Internet users, whom he knows to be wise and caring folk. Typing with his nose, he issues a plaintive plea for assistance on a literature forum, stressing that their aid must come no later than 7:00 AM. Knowing that his fellow lovers of literature will not let him down, Little Pepe goes to sleep easily, feeling (for the first time in his life) the spirit of community and brotherhood that links all living things . . .

PART 3:
The next morning, Little Pepe stares at the screen in horror. There, he finds no helpful hints or friendly pointers, but instead vicious taunts and cruel mockery. "What did I do to deserve this?" he whispers to himself, as tears roll down each cheek. He knows that only the brightest, most learned people on the Web hang out at literature forums, so he knows that they could have helped him--cruelly, they chose not to. He picks himself up, and heads to his uncertain fate--certain only in the fact that, whatever it is, it will most certainly be cruel.

EPILOGUE:
As Little Pepe heads for the door, something on the table catches his eye: it is a copy of A Farewell to Arms. He has been meaning to read it for quite some time. With the betrayal of the literature forum folks still fresh in his mind, he cries out, "Stupid literature!" He seizes the book and hurls it into the fireplace where the morning fire still blazes. At least, that is what he pictures himself doing: tragically, he has no arms with which to seize or hurl. Sobbing, he runs out the door.

Now, that's pathos!

BSturdy, this is someone whose post read in a very cavalier fashion, who basically said "i will be back at 7 to see what you have come up with for 2/3 of my assignment." not someone who even wanted to discuss said assignment. not someone who sounded at all participatory in his homework.

maybe someone was being amusing him/herself however; that's always possible, too.

just read your post, Basil. what one can do with 4 little paragraphs! you know about the personal poetry section, right? you can submit stories there too.

Well one would certainly think that if he had a genuine love of literature, he wouldn't be around here demanding (yes, as amuse points out, demanding) others do his homework. I'm also pretty confident that both his uninterested parents and his overworked teacher are quite happy that a bunch of strangers aren't doing his work for him.

I think we'd all agree that the sophistication of one of these posts relative to the other makes a much more powerful statement about who is being puerile.

BSturdy, I think I owe you an apology. Once I had the idea of casting this guy ("eatmorchikin") as a piteous victim of circumstance in his own little tale of woe, I just had to go with it. In doing so, however, I think that you (as the person who had stuck up for him) received some undeserved condescension as well: as a regular posting member of this forum, you don't deserve that. I'm sorry.

I do think, though, that this guy's post did deserve to be mocked--and I'll be happy to provide my reasoning if anyone wants to hear it. You and I may have a fundamental disagreement about this, but there's nothing wrong that.

And yeah, I guess it was pretty juvenile . . .

Still, can you blame the poor kid, he is probably lacking in english skills, if his nick is anything to go by, so in desperation he turns to "the Literature Network" thinking it will be full of bookworms with nothing better to do with their time then assist helpless teens having trouble with their english homework.

Honestly i have a little trouble with Persuasive techniques as well. I'm in yr 12 and i still dont find it easy to analyse an article to find rhetorical questions or expert opinions. But i do need help as well in trying to figure out how to go about finding them. So if anyone is actually kind enough to lend a hand in knowledge, well uh... thanks.

I agree with Mono. An essay like this will not be good, if done as a straight-forward essay. I think that humor and indirection are what you need. You might also want to use historical fact.

I have to go to work in an hour, does anyone want to go in and do my shift? Basically so that I can sit at home and play video games while you sweat and toil on my behalf and when you have finished working my shift I will pocket the money for myself and barely thank you for your charity. cheers.
